A FIL/ SIL Bonding Story

Backstory: DH works for the same Union that dad was in.  Its one of the reasons I think my Dad instantly (and I do mean instantly) loved my DH when we started dating.  My Dad used to love having looooong conversations about the retirements plans and guys on the yard and all kinds of union stuff with DH.  Mind you, my Dad had been retired for ten+ years and DH had been there about 5yrs at the time.

One of my Dad's favorites was snow plow overtime.  My mom would listen to the weather and as soon as snow was predicted, his boots where by the door with instructions not to come home until he was snow blind.  Plowing would get overtime and double time, and that was a big deal : )

Since DH is in the same Union, he occasionally gets the opportunity to work snow removal.  I always joke and say I'll have your boots waiting by the door.  This weekend we got 28" of snow, so DH got called in for snow removal (double time- score!)  He had to go up to my Dad's old yard to get some salt but there was a really long line. So DH strikes up a conversation with some of the older guys waiting in line, and mentions my dad.  They start talking and telling stories about him.  Then the guy in charge says 'this is Bobby's boy, move him to the head of the line.'

It brought tears to my eyes to hear that even though my Dad has been retired for close to 15 years, they are still fondly remembering him on his yard.  I know that my Daddy is proud of John and looking down on him and taking care of him.

Its funny how life gives you these little gifts.
