WWYD re Work and Snow

So, I am supposed to go out to a client's tomorrow morning.  Google maps predicts the travel time to be 45 minutes (assuming perfect conditions).  With that being said, I was thinking of leaving my house at 7:30 to get there by 9:00.  I realize that it  a lot longer than 45 minutes but I have never been there before and don't normally take that expressway.  (Leaving myself room for error).

Anywho, it has just come to my attention that the Chicago area is supposed to get about 10 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow.  Three inches by morning and another 5-7 during the day.

I know it doesn't seem like a lot but it's supposed to make the morning rush hour horrible.  Do I bring this up to my supervisors at work or should I just bite the bullet and go?  I HATE driving in fresh snow, especially on the expressways, travel times often double.  Also, this is a brand new client to the firm and we really need to go out there tomorrow in order for the rest of the timeline to work out properly.

Overall, I don't want to come across the wrong way with my boss and at the same time, risk my life for fixed asset/depreciation review.

Re: WWYD re Work and Snow

  • I think I would allow even more time to get there and leave around 7 instead of 7:30.

However, if you aren't comfortable driving in fresh snow, maybe you should mention to your boss that you've heard a major storm system is coming in and just wanted to make sure you would still be expected to go in the morning.

  • I agree with Mandy and maybe see if you could push it back so it's not during rush hour.

  • Were getting that storm today Mel, and from what ive seen from our traffic reports its not good. Were getting 5 inches today and 2 overnight and then 2-3 more inches tomorrow. I would maybe talk to your boss if this is the same storm your going to get. Also were expected to get blowing and drifting which of course just makes visibility worse. Its up to you totally but thats what i would do. Since its causing people to take triple the time to get where they are going.
  • I would at least mention it to my immediate manager and ask their thoughts.  Chances are if you're reconsidering due to the forecast, your client might be as well.

It'd really bite if you spend 2 hours getting there in the beginnings of a snowstorm only to find the person/people you were supposed to meet with didn't make it in either! Tongue Tied

  • I agree you should maybe mention to your boss about the snowstorm and make sure they still expect you to go in. If so then make sure you leave at least 2 hours. Sometimes the traffic times from O'hare to Downtown get up to 2 hours by 7AM on snow days.

  • I didn't even have to approach him, he came by and was like, cancel that appointment. There is no reason to sit in traffic for 3 hours.  When I called the client they were planning on rescheduling too.
