When I lived in Orlando, it took me awhile, but I finally found Jaime, a hair stylist whom I absolutely love love loved. She was wonderful and funny and she gave me wine, AND she knew how to cut my hair and it was good.
Then we moved to Bulgaria for seven months and I lamented her loss. I refused to get my hair cut there since the mullet was the "in" style and I couldn't communicate my lack of desire to bring back the 80s into my life. These were dark days.
From Bulgaria we moved to South Florida, and lo it was revealed to me that there were other fantastic hair stylists in the state. If possible, I love love loved my new stylist Kelli even more than I loved Jaime. She didn't give me wine, but she did things to my hair that no one else could.
Then we up and moved to Boston.
Its been four months since my last hair cut and, although my hair still looks fairly good, I think it's just about time to end the mourning period and find someone new.
Sooo... recommend your stylist!! He or she should be someone that deals with thick, wavy hair well... and isn't prone to doing crazy things like cutting really short layers, unexpected bangs, or going all batshizzcrazy and deciding one side of your hair really should be shorter than the other side. (Yes, all of these things that have happened to me in the past.) If possible, I'm looking for someone who has clients who follow them from salon to salon because they are so amazing. (I really believe it's some sort of strange hairstylist thing that causes many of them to do a fabulous job the first one or two cuts and then spontaneously start sucking. I'm not sure why this is, but I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.)
Okay, this wound up being really long, but I am prone to wordiness anyway and clearly I feel strongly about my hair. TIA!
Re: Recommend your hair stylist
My stylist is Danielle at Salon Acote on Newbury St. Her prices are very reasonable for that area ($60 for a cut) and she does such a good job. I have never been so happy with a stylist before. I would follow her to the ends of the earth! She also does free bang trims. I've also had Gianfranco and he gave me a cut that got so many compliments. He left the salon and has since come back. But I'm happy with Danielle!
The salon also gives out coffee, lattes, cappucinos, pastries, and fruit. And in the summer, they have a rooftop deck.

This post made me sad because I used to have a stylist that I followed around to three different salons but then she up and disappeared last year
I mean, even when I lived in SF I often waited for trips home to Boston to get my hair cut.
I've been trying to find a new person since but don't have any strong recommendations yet unfortunately.
I go to Kelly B. at Blondie in Waltham. She's an amazing stylist and even more amazing with color if you're into highlights. She's been doing my hair for years and did mine and all of my BM's for my wedding. She's incredible!
