Bellingham?

Hi Nesties,

Introducing myself here. DH and I were married in September and are living right in Boston now. Looking for our first home (yikes!) and hoping to get some Nestie wisdom about some of the areas we are looking at.

I work in Norwood and DH needs commuter rail into town. We found a home in North Bellingham that we really liked. Is anyone familiar with the area? Its hard to find info about smaller towns in MetroWest online, so I thought a forum might be the best bet.

 TIA. :-)

Re: Bellingham?

  • I'm pretty familiar with Bellingham. I grew up in the town right next to it (Mendon). I only know that the traffic isn't bad and Bellingham has all the great shops. The only big advice I can give is, during the holiday season, do NOT go to the WalMart off of 126. Only one exit and entrance and the traffic around that area is horrible at that time of year.

    GL!!

  • Thanks, Laina! The house we are looking at is about a mile away from the WalMart, a block or so off 126. We are slightly worried that the location will be busy, but busy doesn't worry us as much as safety. Is the area safe? How are the schools?

  • Bellingham is definitely safe. I knew a few people from that town. I didn't go to school there, but from what I've heard the school's there are good (not as good as Mendon though, hahaha - yah, I'm biased.)

Sorry I don't have too many more details about the school's/education.

  • Haha, it's OK. I am just looking for some general perspective. My buyers agent is a pretty stuffy guy who has a different POV about life than DH and I do....we live in Forest Hills in JP now, no problems, and I can tell my buyers agent lives in a new construction subdivision with a lot of affluent people who drive Lexuses. He doesn't think the neighborhood is safe, but I think having multiple opinions can count for something.

  • It sounds like you may need a new agent.

I don't know anything about Bellingham, but you may be able to find information about the school system at greatschools.org or the MA Department of Elementary & Secondary Education website.

Also, I don't know if you are signed up with ZipRealty but on each listing it will give you some info about the town/surrounding area that might be helpful for you.

    GL!

  • Welcome!  I don't know anything about that area, but good luck with the house hunt.

  • Thanks! It's very scary sometimes :-)

  • Bellingham...not so much a fan, but I have a couple friends who just bought there.  Like Laina was saying all the shops for the area are there, but that means the traffic around the shops can be horrid, and if you're just trying to get home OMG forget leaving between October til December 25th specially on the weekends.   But it's not horrible, for the right house, it'd be nice.

If you are looking in that area, I'd also suggest Medway, Hopedale (gulp, my HS's rivals booo, but really cute town), Franklin, Wrentham, Mendon (my home town, too!), Ashland, Hopkinton, Grafton, Millis, Holliston (good schools) Natick.

Franklin actually would probably be the convenient.  Access to 495 at two exits to get to Norwood via 95 I guess, and they also have two commuter rail stations, downtown my the college and Forge Park.  Also, Natick is pretty close to Norwood and has some good commuter lines.

Are you working with a realator yet?  They should be able to talk up the towns your looking at.  If need some reccomendations I know a couple of good realtors in the area who can really help you understand the towns and find the right place for you.

  • Have you looked at Franklin? I'm pretty sure the school systems are decent if you have kids now or in your future, it's on the commuter rail, and it's closer to Norwood.

    Or Mansfield?

Norwood has some really nice towns right aorund it, but very expensive (Westwood, Dover, Medfield, etc).

I know some great realtors, too (including the one DH and I are using) and I'd be happy to give some recommendations as well.

  • Thanks, girls! We have a great buyer's agent that is based out of Franklin, so he has been so helpful in showing us the ropes.

We decided this morning to walk on the house in Bellingham. Another offer was submitted and we had some doubts about some of the surrounding properties, so we passed. We really like Franklin a lot, and have heard good things about schools, people, etc. So we are keeping our fingers crossed that something will come on the market for us there.
