Would you hire a wedding photog w/no disc?

Just curious, a photog friend of mine has pulled the disc of images from the package and is offering it for an additional $1k

My reaction was that I don't know anyone who would book a photog who didn't give the disc with the package. Especially since there are so many who do.

So, just curious, would you book a wedding photographer who did not include the disc of images? If it makes a difference, he includes an album with the packages.

Feel free to disagree with me! I'm really just curious!

  • I wouldn't.  I think that's a crappy move.
  • I wouldn't either.  Just curious, why is he changing his policies?
  • He's trying to attract a higher end client.

  • I wouldn't either. I love having the disc.
  • Heck no.  I paid $400 for my entire package and couldn't have been happier.  That included my photographer's time and the disc which she had to me 2 days after our wedding.
  • I only got a disc of low res photos.  The editted ones he put on a photo share website that I downloaded.  This worked for us.

  • Nope.  I love having all the images in a disc on my comp.
  • No, that was a must have when we were looking for a photog.
    Anniversary
  • I wouldn't hire him because I wouldn't be able to afford $1k for the disc most likely but I don't think it's an unreasonable policy if he is trying to attract higher end clients.  In fact, I think it is pretty common practice for some of the high end photogs to not offer a disc at all.
  • Depending on his quality of work, I would consider hiring him w/o a disc as part of the package.  With that said, I would want to purchase the disc in addition to the package, but would not pay $1,000 for it!
  • absolutely not.  that is definitely a requirement when looking for a photog!
  • No way, I would just find someone in my budget who did offer a disc.
  • Personally, no.  It was a HUGE selling point for me and the photog I chose.  I had 3 things that were musts... the disc, online gallery that never expired and the right amount of hours I needed.

Having said that I do know people who did not get the rights to their own pictures (which I think is basically the same thing) and they paid A LOT and their pictures are great.  I think the people who would do that are people who just arn't picture people.  If that makes sense.

  • Personally no way would I hire him. That was a requirement when I was picking a photographer. That being said, if I was a rich client w/ money to spend and I really loved his work I would go for it. So maybe it's a good move for him, but I really doubt it.

  • Personally, no.  But most of my friends/family wouldn't even know what to do with a disk, so it wouldn't be an issue for them.

So let's say your friend is a fab photog like Leah.  They would be thrilled getting her work and would have no use for the disk.  Where as I would want both, so Leah offering both would attract both me & my friends.

    does that help?

  • We paid extra for our disc (I think it was $500).  It was worth it to me because I loved our photographer and was willing to do whatever it took to book her.  But, if it wasn't such a special photog or if there were a lot of great options in the area I probably would have went with someone who included the disc in the package.
  • The photographer that came with our package did that.  The ONLY thing includedin our package was x number of 3x5 photos and an album we had to put the pictures in ourself.  If you wanted the rights/the disc and any other photos.  The disc alone was close to 1k...but like I said they were included in our wedding package so we did use them for the ceremony.  We also hired an outside photographer which we had to pay extra to have him also shoot the ceremony but the disc and the rights were included in his package...but no album.  I don't think he does albums come to think of it...but that was ok we got so many at my shower I just used those.

    This.

  • Morgan - This is why I started asking about newborn photographers because if you look on their website they want to charge you either $1200 for the disk or $75 each digital image.  Maybe it is just me, but I think that that is crazy for a disc.

As for wedding pictures, that was a MUST!!!

  • personally no, but then again we didn't higher a photographer for our wedding or AHR.

if he wants to get a higher end cliental, i think it is a great idea!  a lot of photographers out here don't include that in their packages.

  • Not in the digital age... a disk is a must! I understand some people would not know what to do with it, but the majority would. When I was looking for a photographer I crossed those off the list who did not offer a disk with the package. If his goal is to attract higher end why not just raise his rate, rather than separate the disk from the package? I guess I could see selling it separate if the photographer was part of a wedding package from a resort or something, but if it's an indep photographer that just seems tacky... IMHO!
  • I wouldn't, especially as a dw bride its easier to get the pics out if you have a disc. Plus all photogs I looked at offeref it, so it seems they would be in the minority and not get as much business.

Portrait photography is totally different animal. Especially custom portraiture. The wedding industry operates in  bulk, hundreds of pictures over a whole day. So the disk is common.

Most portrait photography sessions are much shorter but a lot of work goes into the processing etc. You get the best of the best and the disc is not as common.

Not saying it's right or wrong, just different way of doing things.

  • I did.

he set up a site where I could load them in ZIP format, directly to my computer.

    ?
  • It's not uncommon for photographers to do this but I figure you must have quite the reputation and be very established before you attempt to do this and not cut into your bottom line..
  • I would want the disk, either as part of the package or an option(I wouldnt want to pay an additional 1k for it though)
