CL question

Would you buy a bed off CL? DH and I really need a king bed since Bella will ONLY sleep for any length of time in our bed but I hate to spend a ton on a new one... What would you do? Would you continue to save while being cramped in a queen bed or would you buy a decent used one off CL? I'm debating... I'm a budget woman so I hate to buy anything new really!

Re: CL question

  • My lil monster managed in our queen bed. I would not buy a matress used. Are there places that have new matresses cheap? Here, IKEA. They also have a thing at Sleep Country where they sell matresses that don't match the boxspring for cheap.

  • I personally would save up for a new one. I wouldn't buy a used bed/mattress just because I am scared of buying a used bed infested with beg bugs.  That's just me though. I had a bed bug scare (which turned out to be hives) and have heard of bed bug infestation in NYC so I am very paranoid with that kind of stuff.
  • We've bought two beds off CL...the frames/bed not the mattresses.  Those, I'd get new.
  • We bought an IKEA frame off CL, then got the mattress new. It was a floor sample at Mattress Warehouse so we got a good deal. We had to ask and ask for a deal though before they offered it to us.

I would also not buy a mattress used. Especially not one that the your whole family -- and baby! -- plan to sleep on.

However, I would buy a used mattress from a FRIEND... So you could always put the word out.

  • Depends on what you mean by "bed". I'd totally buy a used frame - no harm there. Wouldn't buy a used mattress though.
  • With President's Day just around the corner, I bet you can get a great deal on a new mattress.  Especially if you have cash in hand to negotiate with at the store.  We've done this before...you basically go in with your wad of cash and say, "I've got $X.XX and want a the best King Sized mattress you can sell me for it."  In these economic times you'd be surprised the wheeling and dealing retailers will do...especially furniture stores, etc.

Another option is to find a Sear's Outlet near you...they sell appliances, mattresses, electronics, etc. for WAY le$$.  Often times they are misdelivered items that have been returned and cannot be sold as brand-new.  For example, say someone ordered a Cal King and a regular King was delivered and set-up.  Well they return it and sell it to you for a deep discount.

IKEA might also be a good option for cheaper mattresses without sacrificing quality.  Finally, we picked up a brand new Serta Twin Mattress this weekend from Big Lots (the ones in Tulsa sell furniture too) for the daybed in our nursery for $99 (I have been co-sleeping on it with Libby at night so Joseph can get some sleep in our bed/bedroom).

Also, if you get a bed frame that doesn't require a box spring/foundation, you can save money.  So a platform bed, etc. would be best then just add the mattress, no box springs needed (extra $$$ for them).  If you do go the box spring route, then you can get away with a cheaper "Hollywood" frame (metal square with legs) but they tend to run a couple of hundred bucks (unless you find one for cheap on CL) and then you'll still need the box springs.

  • Like the PPs, I'm not sure about the buying a used mattress from craigslist. Not knowing the who else has been on the bed and what's been done on it gives me the creeps. And I don't think I want to smell other people's scent. (sorry, my weirdness).

Another place to try for deals is the big box warehouse stores like Sam's club or Costco - I've heard of people getting really good deals there too.

  • given bed bugs and everything else no I would not buy a king bed off cl.  also sarah another thing to consider is that sheets and comforters for king size beds are much more expensive than for queen sized beds-i always debate getting a king sized bed and then i look at the price of king sized bed linens and nix the idea-did you get the sleep specialist info that i sent you a while back?  hope you and the family are doing well?
  • i agree with PP ...would get the frame but not mattress used.  and yes, sam's and costco tend to have pretty good deals on mattresses
  • Ditto on pp. I'd only get a 2nd hand mattress if it was from someone I know well (like family) and I know the mattress has not been damaged and isn't that old and they're getting rid of it for other reasons. But I wouldn't buy a mattress off of CL or anyone I didn't know well just cuz a bad mattress can really screw up your back and that's not worth any amount of savings to me. I'm pretty picky even about which new mattress I get. But for the frame, like pp mentioned, I think CL would be just fine. GL!
