green houses?

So Duff, what all will your green house entail?  Geothermal heat?  Tankless hot water heater?  Energy efficient appliances?   Solar panels?  Recycled glass countertops?  Bamboo flooring?

Re: green houses?

  • It's the way that it's built.  I don't have all the stuff w/me to tell you exactly what gets done, but I know for sure that it's some kind of super insulation and the windows are supposed to be really good.  Also, the landscaping is all xeroscaped, which is pretty normal for all NM homes.  We're upgrading to a "greener" package that will include a tankless water heater and toilets w/two different flushing options...also the walls will be built with different boards (maybe they're thicker?  I can't for the life of me remember).  All appliances are Energy Star.  Overall, the house has to meet state standards to be called "green" and go through several different inspections.  I think someone told me that the state standards are pretty strict.

I want to evetually replace the carpet with bamboo too though.

They told us initially that it costs $50-60 per year to cool the house and $100-200 per year to heat it.  They just did the testing on the first of our model and it came in at $50/year to cool and $92/year to heat.  Every single house that gets built is tested for the cooling/heating too.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • Those are incredible heating and cooling costs!  The price, per YEAR?!  Shoot, our closet of an apartment costs over $100 a month to cool it in the summer in PA of all places.  Those prices blow my mind.
  • I know!  When my friends told me what it'd cost, I told them they were lying or being lied to.  I work for the elctric company and have NEVER heard of cooling costs that low (not that I work with customers or anything).

I'll believe it when I see it though.  It sounds really possible though w/all the things they do to the house.  And we hardly cool or heat our house right now anyway b/c it's so expensive.  Seriously, we're on budget billing (they spread the cost of a year over 12 months) and we're paying about $90-100 a month for both heating and cooling.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!
