Any experience with hard water?
We've recently noticed that we may have a hard water problem in our house. Especially in the bathroom, when the water is running in the tub it has a smell of rotten eggs, its pretty gross and smelly, but is this a sign of hard water?
Has anyone had any experience with hard water and what to do for it or if its not hard water any idea what it could be and how to fix it?
We live in the town of Greece, so we're not on a well system but the smell has gotten significant over the past couple of weeks.
TIA!
Re: Any experience with hard water?
We have hard water out here... it's not smelly, just overly 'minerally'. We have a Pur filter in the kitchen, and use special dishwasher detergent for the dishwasher, so we don't get the film on the dishes.
I don't know what to do about the smell.... if it's city water, I'd call and see if there have been any problems, or any other complaints.

I think water that smells like rotten eggs is an indicator of too much sulfur in the water... A quick google search turned up this on wikipedia:
Sulfur water
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sulfur water is a condition where the running water contains a high amount of hydrogen sulfide gas that escapes into the air when the plumbing line is opened, giving a distinct "rotten egg" smell.
Treatment
Treatment for sulfur water is turning up the temperature setting on the water heater to over 140?F and running it for several hours, letting others know you have scalding water running in your pipes, and then flushing the water heater clean. The heat is supposed to kill the bacteria. One should also get a good water filter to remove all mineral and chemical impurities at the tap. Also, one should contact his or her local water treatment facility.
I don't think hard water should smell like sulphur- since you're in the town, I'd give them a call to see if there is something they're aware of going on and/or if they have any suggestions.
