Really, ma?

So I'm talking to my mom on the phone the other day, and she's all "I sent you a package, and you're going to love it, call me when you get it". so I eeep a little bit and check the door every day with nada. Today I come home and there's a big brown box sitting by the front door *YAY*. I run through the house ignoring the dogs, grab it, shake it, etc. I open the box to find a ginormous tupperware container with a gift inside and 2 cards, one to me, and one to me and hubby. I skip the one to hubby and me and go straight to solo card. *insert mom singing happy birthday*. Pull the bag out and find all sorts of individually wrapped items; more to open, awesome! I open the first to find sewing scissors, the second is thread...no sew glue...pin cushion...straight pins...seam ripper...second pair of scissors...etc. This goes on and on and on.

So I call mom, "hey ma, got your gift, thanks. What's with all the sewing stuff" Ma answers "when I was down for the wedding and working on all your DIY stuff with you, we never had scissors, you had 1 needle, your pin cushion had glue on it so you couldn't stick needles in it...". So I thank her and hang up.

*enter thought process* Really? Why would I want a sewing kit for my birthday. a) I have no time to sew b) if I have a "sewing kit" that is so lacking, obviously I never use it c) it's my birthday, please don't get me a practical gift!

Anyway, hubs comes home me: "hey baby, ma sent us a valentines day gift, I left the card for you to open" him: "your mom got us a gigantic tupperware container and a dish scrubber".  Again with the practical gift?! Apparently when she was down here we didn't have big enough tupperware for her (we don't usually have to cook for 12 people!!) and our dish sponge looked like it was in terrible shape. What a way to show love mom, thanks.

I am finding more and more humor in this as the night goes on, but really, I'm married now so I only get practical gifts? Can I not keep a house good enough for ma's standards so she decides to help me out. If you're gonna send me a sewing kit, just send the money...I'd rather get myself groceries.  Don't get me wrong, I'm greatful, but all I can say is, really??

TG hubs got me diamond earrings for my birthday to make up for the cruddy ma gifts! *squeeeeee*

Re: Really, ma?

  • Well first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Second, I think her gift is sweet.  She noticed some things you needed and got them for you.  I think it might be a generational thing.  If she had gotten you cash you wouldn't remember it in ten years, but this box of random?  That you'll definitely remember!

And yay for diamond earrings, that's awesome!

  • Thanks! It's not til Wednesday but we celebrated early because I have 3 tests this week. bummer. I agree it was thoughtful and I should have expected a practical gift, she got me a composter for Christmas! lol. Maybe I just want to be spoiled, I could really use some new clothes, but that's what hubbys are for!
  • Hahaha, that's such a "Mom" thing to do!  Maybe it's generational, like Panda said, but I'm sure she thought you were really missing not having giant Tupperware and sewing supplies.  My mom stopped by on Sunday to bring me spatulas.  :)

But yay for diamond earrings!  And HAPPY (early) BIRTHDAY! Party!!!
