Weekend Away Ideas for My Bday

My birthday is coming up at the end of the month.  February is a super hectic month for both DH and I, so I was thinking a nice relaxing trip would be a great way to celebrate.  However, we are on a budget so it can't really be too pricey.

Does anyone have a good place not too far from Raleigh (2-3 hour) to go for Friday/Saturday night?  Also, you get major brownie points if it is dog friendly since that would make things easier to bring Rudy along.  I'm thinking maybe a cabin in the mountains near a town that we could wander around.

Or do you know of a fun, easy-going type daytrip we could take?

I also should add that we haven't seen any of NC since moving to Raleigh except Kill Devil HIlls over the summer.

Re: Weekend Away Ideas for My Bday

  • Boone isn't that far away from Raleigh - I'm sure there are cabins available that are pet friendly nearby - and both Boone and Blowing Rock are cute towns to wander around.  The only thing would be that there will likely still be a fair amount of snow up there this time of year (nesties who live in the mountains could probably give a better idea of this than me!).  According to quick googling - this place is supposed to be nice and is pet friendly: http://www.thevillageinnsofblowingrock.com/village_inn.html

  • Hmm not sure about the moutains with all the snow - driving through that wouldnt be relaxing to me.

How about the beach?  You can go to Myrtle Beach for super cheap right now and some hotels are pet friendly.  We are going this weekend - got a beach and breakfast special - bfast sat & sun mornings and a coupon to shop @ Tanger.

  • There are a lot of cabin rentals up here. As far as the weather goes: We've had a rougher winter this year, but they are really good about keeping the roads clear. Unless you'll be coming in during a storm the roads shouldn't be an issue.

It is tourist season up here so coming on a weekend will certainly be busier. Normally by the end of Feb things slow down a bit, but the weather has been so "good" this year it's been busier all together. I don't see it slowing down until mid to late March.

I like squesh's idea. The beach will be practically deserted right now. That could be nice to not have to deal with a lot of other vacationers.

  • check with BlairWaldorf about a cabin that she stayed in with her DH and their dog.

    I think that was this:

(I had it bookmarked since I remember thinking it looked neat!)

  • I vote for Charlston or Wilmington, both are good for weekend trips and fun to walk around and explore (though Charleston is a little further than you wanted). I think I would much prefer to visit the mountains during the spring/summer/fall when I could better enjoy the outdoors, though I do think it would be easier to find a pet-friendly place to stay (cabin) in the mountains. Maybe you could find a pet-friendly condo @ Carolina Beach and drive to Wilmington?
  • You could get the Beaufort/Morehead City in 2-3 hours. Beaufort is a cute little town.

  • DH and I went to Beaufort NC not long after we moved to NC.  We stayed here: http://www.countyhomeb-b.com/  it's pet friendly and relatively inexpensive.
