Valentine's Dinner

A friend and I are cooking a V-day dinner on Saturday for our husbands.  I have no idea what we should make (and neither does she).

Anyone have any good ideas?  I know for dessert we are doing a berry cobbler but that's as far as we've gotten.

Re: Valentine's Dinner

  • Most men love steak but without a grill, I'm not sure if it can be done nicely in the house.

Is there anything specific/special that they really like but don't get too often because it's a PITA to make?

  • MH pretty much will eat anything.  He's never mentioned a "favorite" food that I make that's complex.  Honestly as long as there is food on the table, he's happy.

I don't think using the grill will be possible - it's under quite a bit of snow right now.

  • This came to mind and is what I wanted to do for us (but there's no way I'll have the time or equipment) - Individual Beef Wellington.  I have a recipe at home that I'd made once before when we had another couple over.  It's kind of a putzy recipe, but quite impressive and since it's so putzy, feels special.

The hardest part is making is if people like steaks done so dramatically different (ie: I like my steak medium, medium-rare.  One of our guests likes his well done.  (What a waste of a steak, IMO, as well.))

I'd do something like that (I can't find the exact recipe online - there are dozens though.)  Pair with some roasted asparagus or green beans, a nice salad and some wine... Mmmmmm!

  • I am trying to plan the same thing and so far I'm leaning towards chicken parmesan...I made it about a month or so ago and it was fantastic.  First time I tried that recipe and MH really loved it.

  • You could always do a pasta dish - stuffed shells, manicotti, lasagna, etc.

Or Chicken Cordon Bleu.  Someone in my Google Reader just posted that not too long ago.

  • You could do a filet and do a white mac and cheese.  I have a great recipe for one that uses Gruyere, Asiago, and Smoked Mozzarella cheese.  Or you could do Pillsbury pastries and put some asparagus and carrots inside and top a mushroom sauce.  Make a nice salad.

  • Surf and turf - steak and lobster.
