Just think: if we lived in Europe...

...where maternity leave is considered beneficial to the society as a whole, women get (depending on the country) an average of two years per child at 60-80% salary.?

?? I just love that idea! Most of my friends have kids almost exactly two years apart, so that one leave rolls right into the next as well. (Yes, this is legal)

?? One of the many, many reasons why their SOL is so much higher!?

?

Re: Just think: if we lived in Europe...

  • That is freakin awesome!!

Umm, what is SOL? geez, I am feeling like a ra-tard today!

  • WOW! That is a great idea!
  • SOL = standard of living

    that would be awesome.

i just had dinner with a friend and we were talking about this.  she grew up in mn, but has been living in denmark for the past couple years.  i also found it interesting that they have free healthcare, but dental is not included.  i never knew that, but i guess that explains the english/european teeth stereotype. she said it costs about the same, possibly a little less, for her to go to the dentist here without insurance.  and that she prefers that since she has an easier time explaining things in english.

  • Let's also talk about the 2-3 hour lunches too...I always hated rushing through 30 minutes!!

  • I guess is the Allies hadn't won WWII we'd technically have all this.  And be speaking German.  And all have blond hair and blue eyes.

Give me the USA any day.  If I wanted European ways, I'd move to Europe.

Oh, and "free" is not really "free".  Someone somewhere is paying for it in some form or fashion.

I actually hesitated to post this because I didn't want the comment to devolve into a political discussion, but as Chris Rock says, "that train is never late!". Wink

So since y'all brought it up... yes, their taxes are technically higher. But have you ever done the math? If my "taxes" included all of the services that theirs do (medicine, education, etc) I would be looking at a significant pay increase. And my life would be better, too.

I know that I am in a different situation than many, in that I could have dual citizenship if I chose to. But regardless, I think that a move to Europe would be a step in the right direction.  Maybe some day...::fingers crossed:: or maybe America will change more.
