Charchie and others who've ordered from "Penzey's"

I just got their catalog in the mail and am a little overwhelmed. What are the best things to get from there? I was thinking about the vanilla extract and some of their spices. Thoughts?

Re: Charchie and others who've ordered from "Penzey's"

  • There's a Penzey's in Pittsburgh that Dh and I like to hit up when we're in town. We usually get flake salt, some kind of hot sauce and whatever we happen to be running low on. They've got great quality & great customer service.
  • I've slowly been replacing all my stuff with Penzeys products. You can't go wrong with anything. Check out their bags of herbs, spices and mixes. Parsley is wicked cheap. The Penzeys-only things I use the most are the sandwich sprinkle and the Brady Street cheese sprinkle. Seriously. Close your eyes, point, and order. You won't be disappointed.
  • I've never even heard of this place but after looking at their prices I will definitely be ordering from them. I just requested a catalog. Thanks!

  • We order tons of items from Penzey's.  The "hot ticket" items for us are the vanilla (we buy the double strength), Pizza Seasoning, Parsley and Chives.  I agree with pp though - you cannot go wrong with ordering!  Just be careful not to order the large sizes yet. You may want to see how much parsley you really use in 6 months before buying 4 ounces of it!  Have fun!

  • FYI, you can store your bagged herbs/spices in the freezer, which makes them last a ton longer.

    Good to know.

Thank ladies. I'm going to look through the catalog again tonight and pick out some stuff.

  • like OPs have said, you seriously can't go wrong with anything in there.

we have replaced all of our basic spices with stuff from there and our "specialty" regulars are brady street, northwoods, pasta sprinkle, pizza sprinkle, sandwich sprinkle, taco seasoning, 4S salt mix, vanilla... i think that's it.  i've also found that it's cheaper to buy plain jars and refill w/ bagged spices.  you also (typically) get a free sample of something when you order :)

  • We have a store here, which is awesome!  I love going there!  We'll have to replace all our spices when we are finally able to move into our own place - that box got stuck in the garage and I'm sure everything it ruined due to the temperature fluctuations.  I'm exited for my Penzey's shopping spree.

But, that's not what you asked. . . I agree with everyone, you really can't go wrong.  I got their pasta sprinkle this summer, and I really like it.  They also introduced their own cinnamon blend around Christmas, which is really yummy.  I got both of those as free items - the catalog almost always comes with a coupon on the front for something free!
