Birth Control

I've been off birth control for a couple years now, and I have a Dr appt on Friday to go back on.  I'm just wondering what BCPs have you all had luck with (by luck I mean, very little side effects, etc).

I have been on Depo-Provera, and I do not wish to go back on it, I had a very difficult time coming off of it, and it also contributed to significant weight gain.  I also don't want to do a long term birth control such as an IUD.

Let me know what you girls think!  That's why I like these boards, real advice from real people who have been there, done that!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Birth Control

  • I'm on NuvaRing, which isn't a BCP, but I love it. It's once a month and not an IUD. Most of the time your gyno will give you a free sample of it if you want to give it a shot for a month, or at least mine will.

  • I take Aviane, the generic form of Alesse, which is the lowest dose two-hormone birth control out there.  I haven't experienced much in the way of side effects - my boobs grew, though I'm not sure whether that was due to the birth control or just something that would have happened naturally anyway.  And, like with anything that fools your body into thinking it's pregnant, if you gain weight for one reason or another, it's hard to lose (though I don't think the birth control actually caused the weight gain - I did that myself).  Overall, I'm pleased with it.

  • If your not into IUD's which can taken out at anytime, why not start charting and read up about it from Taking Charge of your Fertility. .  I would talk to your doctor about your options.

  • I'm another woman who is extremely happy with the NuvaRing.

In theory, you're not supposed to have as many side effects because your body absorbs/metabolizes the hormones differently than it does with pills.  You don't have to worry about it every day, you only have to worry about it every 3-4 weeks.

I'm very happy with it, and plan to stay on it until I decide on a more permanent method of BC (an IUD or Essure).

  • I didn't have luck with any of the three birth controls I tried, but that's me...condoms for us. Hope you find something that works for you. :)
  • Aviane. I didn't have any side effects and no weight gain. My boobs did decrease a little but that was because Othro-tri cyclen lo made them bigger. But I'm not complaining, they're at the same size they were before starting BC.
  • I'm on generic Lo-ovral.  Everyone is different, but for me, no side effects and no babies. Smile

  • I take Aviane, the generic form of Alesse as well and I love it! Haven't felt any side effects, no weight gain either I take it during the day I too was on the depo for 2 1/2 years and I loved it because of the no periods but other than that wouldn't do it again I have tried the patch as well and nothing beats the Alesse pill!

  • I just started using the NuvaRing on Monday. I still feel a little weird about knowing a foreign object is up there 24/7, but I was horrible about remembering to take actual BCP and now I don't have to worry about it.

I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for 4 years and didnt have any side effects up until the last 3 or 4 months. I was on Yaz for a year and HATED it.

  • I have the Implanon Implant..it lasts 3 years and I LOVE it...I have gained about 10 pounds but that has been over the couse of about 6 months. Every BCP I took gave me migrains (due to the estrogen) so I have very happy with the implant!

  • I was on Loestrin for 3 years...only side effect, it causes your periods to stop :)  Not a bad side effect!!  I just stopped taking them last month and period came right on time

I've been on Loestrin for 1 year and when I go in for my gyno appt. in a few weeks, I will be asking to try something different. I had a lot of break-through bleeding during the first 6 months and still have some break-through bleeding even now. Also, my sex drive has plummeted, I can't wait to try something different!

  • I am on Yaz and love it.... I was scared at first because of the bad rap it has but I must say its the best bc I have ever taken.

I have had the nuvaring which put me in the worst mood 24/7 and loestrin which was okay.

Yaz has not caused any weight gain, gave me clearer skin and I am constantly in a good mood... The fiance love its too!
