Biden just screwed Obama in PA

"No coal plants here in America," [Biden] said. "Build them, if they're going to build them, over there [in China]. Make them clean."
He also puts his hands on this girl's shoulders and pointing right in her face while answering the question. It was very strange. But that's beside the point. Most of the nation's anthracite coal is in PA and coal mines contribute about $10 billion to PA's economy. I think this would the equivalent of going to Detroit and saying "no more American auto industry." He might think it, well he obviously does think it, but you can't say it in a national election. I had high expectations for Biden's gaffes and he's not letting me down!

Who trusts China to produce clean coal? I have more faith in our country doing this than relying on foreign countries. So if coal is going to be mined let's do it here and put our people to work and help with our energy needs.
You agree with Biden that we shouldn't have any coal plants at all in America but China should have clean coal, thanks to us, even though "very, very far away from being a reality?" I feel like I just misread your post.
Did you watch the video? It's more clear. The girl asked him about alternative energy and supporting wind/solar power.
He also took back his criticism of Obama's "terrible" ad. He basically said he hadn't actually seen the ad before criticizing it. But now he has and it's not as bad as McCain's ads so it's cool.
I want to call Obama's campaign and thank them for putting Biden on the ticket.
What I mean is that clean coal will not be a viable option ANYWHERE for years. We should not make it a major focus of energy policy over alternative energies or options like natural gas because research on it is many years from being complete.

I believe his position is that we should develop clean coal technology and sell that to China, because they're going to probably use coal regardless, environmental consequences be damned.
Found a Fox News article (surely I get points for using Fox -- jk) on the issue. It gives a little more nuance to the statements, I think. Pasted below.

In the coal country of Castlewood, VA on Saturday, Biden said that instead of John McCain?s tax breaks for oil companies, the United States should be investing billions in clean coal technology. ?We have enough coal to meet our needs domestically for the better part of the next 100 200 years,? Biden said. ?That can free us from being dependent on foreign oil countries and at the same time not ruin the environment.?
But on the rope line after an event in Maumee, OH last week, Biden told an environmental activist who questioned why coal is necessary given clean, effective alternatives like wind and solar, ?we?re not supporting clean coal.?
Biden continued that we should develop the technology here and sell it to places like China ? which are building 2 coal fired plants a week and polluting their air and ours ? but that we shouldn?t build any more plants in the United States. ?No coal plants in America,? he said.
John McCain?s campaign, not surprisingly, prefers Biden?s rope line statement ? and their candidate is already using it against him. In remarks today in Ohio, the Arizona Senator said of Obama, ?his running mate here in Ohio recently said that they weren?t supporting clean coal either. And the fact is that their billions of dollars in hgher taxes would kill jobs here in Ohio. ?
But Biden?s camp insists there?s no difference between the two positions - and that McCain knows better.
Spokesman David Wade says Biden?s claim that ?we?re not supporting clean coal,? in response to the question, just meant that he?s not supporting it over other, cleaner alternatives. And as for that no more coal plants, Wade insists that Biden meant no more dirty plants ? but that Biden favors building 5 clean coal plants in the US with carbon capture and sequestration technology.
?This is yet another false attack from a dishonorable campaign. Senator McCain knows that Senator Obama and Senator Biden support clean coal technology,? Wade said ? touting the Obama-Biden plan that would invest $150 billion in clean energy technology, including coal.
?Senator Biden?s point is that China is building coal plants with outdated technology every day and the United States needs to lead by developing clean coal technologies,? Wade said. ?If Sen McCain is so committed to clean coal, then why hasn?t he joined Senators Obama and Biden in announcing their support for the bipartisan energy proposal before the senate today that would invest bilions in clean coal projects??
?He should expalin why his support for tax breaks for big oil outweighs his suport for clean coal.?
So I listened to the video where he says no coal in America but then read the supporting article where he stated this a couple of days ago:
But the error here does seem to be Biden's, and his remarks, and his apparent return to his primary position Tuesday, were striking because just three days ago, he praised the possibilities of coal to a crowd at the United Mine Workers of America annual fish fry in Castlewood, Va.

He linked the ticket?s support for coal with their call to have U.S. automakers produce plug-in electric cars. ?Where?s that [electricity] come from? That comes from a utility. What do utilities burn? They burn coal mostly.?
So is Biden for coal in America or not?
It gives me warm fuzzies when I agree with Meganne.
This whole thing reminds me of the coal mining episode of 30 days. Something I thought was going to be really dull that ended up really thought-provoking. It's a really difficult predicament - coal mining has so many terrible negatives, but it really does hold whole communities (some states) afloat. I think we need a really nuanced position, which I'm hoping is what Biden is going for with this talking out both sides of his mouth, but he's not pulling that off by a long shot.
Oh silly Biden. And he was supposed to be the one who would bring PA.
