Re: GTA mom's - childbirthing class

  • I know the Region of Peel (health unit) offers them for free.  You might want to check your local health unit to see if they do as well.  Sometimes the hospital offers them.

Do you have a baby superstore or safety superstore around?  I think the one here offered them too in conjunction with The Birth Experience.

  • I know that VON, the Health Unit and some doulas do classes around here. You may want to use that as a jumping off point in your area.

I know that many have foudn the Health Unit ones to be kind of basic though.

We didn't do any classes. Just watched the Laugh and Learn DVD and used a doula. Worked well for us - mind you I ended up in a c-section, but I did labour for 17 hours!

  • Mom & Baby Depot in Ajax is where we went. They list their classes online...we were told that if we had a tour of the facility and had interest in the program they offer we'd get 1/2 off the price!

And we did...I must admit they were pissed that we didn't sign up etc. but hey we saved $75 bucks!

    GL!

  • I will check the health department; thanks ladies

I did end up finding Markham prenatal; whish is behind the hospital.. so I am going to check them out.

Lisa; I got a brochure from Whitby mom and baby depot advertising come for a tour and recieve a free workshop of breastfeeding or newborn care.
I feel they would be very fufilling.

  • Alot of doula's also do childbirth classes, try the DoulaCare website for doula's in your area, and ask them if they know of anyone in your area.

  • Ours was with a doula (recommended by our MW's). I really enjoyed the class. It went through a lot of the pain management techniques, breastfeeding and the different types of labour/delivery. I found that by seeing all the different types of labour/delivery I had a better idea what to expect. Although I could have done without all the bush in the video's. Holy 1980's.
  • LOL Jen, I agree with you I could do without seeing that.

We did our prenatal class at Scarborough Hospital. I did it in 2 weekends for 100 for both DH and I. I can find the info if you are interested.

I loved doing the class. It was great to find out about all the different things and how things would feel and stuff like that.

  • LMAO.... --- 1980's bush... ha ha ha!

Do you think they would have some of those pain management and different types of labour and delivery video's at the health dept. or library?

  • They may. Does your MW's have a library that you can borrow stuff from? Ours have all kinds of videos and books. I never checked to see if they had the birthing videos but they may have.

The pain management techniques were really good to learn in person. We tried them all out. The best 2 were the hip squeeze and then the ice cube (put an ice cube in your hand and sit there with your fist closed not saying another for 2 minutes. Then do it again but talk to your partner. So much easier to handle the pain when distracted by talking)

  • i'm in halton so I'm not sure you're interested but check the links on my site I have few posted there www.idealaccents.ca/links.htm

Good luck, I left my till last minute and finished it only few weeks before DD was born 3 weeks early, the joke during my class was they get to practice live :)

  • Not really answering your question but we borrowed a DVD from the library called Laugh and Learn About Childbirth and really enjoyed it. We actually both laughed a lot while getting a lot of information.
