Clicky Poll: because this board is dead & I'm curious
Boss just "caught" me on TheBump.
In my defense, I was transferring some files & was waiting for the transfer to be completed. 90% of my job is on the computer, and if I try to do anything with our shared drives during the transfer, things tend to get locked up. So on the occasions that I do this, I surf the net.
I work on computer schtuff a lot, and do this quite often. I don't consider it "wrong" if there's a program or something running in the background that I'd have to wait for anyway.
Not that I don't also surf the net on other occasions, if my workload allows, but for this specifically...[Poll]

I voted #2, since it's technically time on the clock... or is all your work tied to your computer? If there's something else you could be doing, then you should probably be doing it. But if your only option is to dust your monitor for 20 minutes, then it's kind of silly to tell you no surfing the Net.
I'm usually on The Nest during my lunch break (as in, right now), and I read the news & other things in this time too. I'll even use the Internet for a mental break when needed in the middle of the afternoon (this is pretty well accepted where I work...heck, my boss is on facebook during the day from her work computer). It's the equivalent of taking a coffee break/smoke break (neither of which I do) or chatting with a co-worker. So long as we're doing our jobs in an efficient manner (a lot of which is online anyway), we're OK here.

This is a big no-no at my place of work. I know we're being watched and I really don't need to get in trouble for something along those lines. The farthest I go is to check some other emails- usually because I'm transferring stuff between the two, or to check the weather/news.
Now, surfing the net on my BB... that's another story.
But only during my personal time... not when I'm working and don't have anything pressing. In my line of work, this is really quite rare.
ETA: My father is an IT manager and he's had to fire people for inappropriate use of workplace machines (eg, porn). The thing about computers is that there is an electronic history of everything you've ever done. So if your workplace is looking for a reason to get rid of you, it's something that could backfire.
