How does one choose a diaper bag?

I've yet to get a diaper bag for baby, I'm currently carting things around in a pink gift bag which is completely impractical.

I am not sure how to choose one though, the only thing I know I want in a bag is that it's unisex and doesn't look like a purse. Other than that I don't really know what to look for...

Anyone want to recommend theirs?

  • We have a messenger bag from SkipHop. It was a gift from the people at work but it's great cause DH can use it when he goes out with Miss P. I have my own from Nine West which looks like a purse that I use and DH uses the SkipHop. The messenger bags come in different colours as well which is nice. We got a nice grey one.

  • Thanks Jen! I will look into the Skip Hop one.

So regular stores sell diaper bags? The only place I know to look right now is Babies R Us... which seems to have a pretty limited selection.

  • I got a Lug bag (Tugboat). I use it for when I need to carry more than normal because I find that it can be harder carrying B around and a bag that doesn't go over my shoulder. I have an Air Walk bag that I got from Payless for when we travel (got it a few years ago) that I now use as a diaper bag.

I really like the Lug bag and do use it probably 25% of the time but if we are going say shopping or something I take my over the shoulder bag.

I got my Lug bag through Sarah's friend.

  • I have this one

I like it, but given a do-over would make sure I got one with more compartments.  Mine has 6 bottle size pockets outside and 6 inside, but I'd like bigger pockets where I could separate clothing from diapers, wallet etc.

That's my advice - try to get something with lots of dividers, cause when it's packed with stuff and you're juggling a fussy McFusserson, it's sometimes hard to find what you're looking for.

  • I have a Lululemon gym bag.  Mine is just one main compartment.  It does have some side pockets and some pockets on the inside. But I personally never had any problems finding stuff in the bag when I needed it.

It's cute and I can use it later on for gym stuff=)

  • That is the one thing I like about my lug bag - it will make a great gym bag!
  • I have a Lug Puddle Jumper, a Coach bag that I will be able to use for work after and a Roots one.  My Lug one is probably my favourite for running around town cause it can get dirty and I can just wipe it off.

  • I have an OiOi hobo that I love, in chocolate herringbone.

It is really sturdy and has quite a few pockets (inside and out). It also isn't ridiculously huge, but is roomy enough to carry everything I need for Evan. It also comes with a bottle cooler and a change pad.

Ditto to this...I love lululemon bags and although I have yet to try it with baby this is what we're going with :)

  • I also have a lululemon gym bag, it is nice and big and enough for both babies for sure, and the good thing is that it is not to girly and DH will use it for sure as well as that I can use it for the gym or whatever afterwards.  We also have a skiphop but it is not big enough for a toddler and a newbie.

This is the lululemon one we have:

but ours is dark gray with lime green inside and it is also fabric, not easy wipe material...I LOVE it.

  • I picked mine through trial and error.  I started out using a graco one that was too small.  Then I loved the free one you get from Nestle. Then once she stopped going through four outfits a day I switched to an oversized purse,  now I carry a purse I love that will also hold a few diapers and a package of wipes.

I HATE packing a diaper bag.

Ouuu I like this one!  I went to Lulu yesterday though and don't like any of the bags they currently carry. Apparently they come out with new bags every year. I will have to look on ebay to see if I can find that one!

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!
