Hello again, ladies- I've been in GA for nearly a week, running around nonstop.
I was hoping one of you had a rec for a jeweler- We have to find me a wedding ring pretty soon. I'd like to find a jeweler that is somewhat unique, but that is still a large chain-like business. In Atlanta, we had the Shane Co, which is where my engagement ring and FI's wedding ring came from, but I couldn't find my wedding ring there. They only have about 10-15 locations nationwide, nearly half of which are around the Atlanta area. I'd like to find a similar type of jeweler to purchase my wedding ring- I don't want to have to worry about them going out of business in 5 or 10 years, but I don't want a major chain jeweler that you can find on any street corner. TIA, and I hope you all are having a wonderful week!!
Re: Jeweler?
So do you want a local chain? Long's has stores around MA. My mom gets a lot of stuff there. I have no idea how they rate for quality and value compared to other stores though. I also remember a lot of girls on the Knot getting their wedding bands at Barmakian.
Well I don't think any of us really know what could happen in 5-10 years with any jeweler. But you could check the Better Business Bureau for ratings; the good ones probably won't be going out of business too soon. I also don't know Shane Co so I can't give you a recommendation based on similarily, but here is what I know.
Our rings are from Longs. There are 4-5 locations in MA, so not overly abundent. They have a wide selection and special orders come in very quick. They also do inscriptions at the Burlington location in house.
Just for your reference the major jewelers available in most MA malls are: Kays, Zales, and Hannouch. There is also Beldan at a few locations.
Jared's is also becoming popular around the country and there is a location in Burlington now.
There are also bunches of more local town jewelers around, especially in Boston. Try a google search or the Yellow Pages for extra suggestions. Oh, and ditto to the PP who recommended posting on TK for recommendations.
Hannoush is pretty much my family jeweler. We get all of our jewelry there. DH got my engagement ring there and even though we didn't get my wedding band there, they engraved it and soddered (sp?) it for no cost. And they clean the jewelry for free (I don't know if all jewelers do it). I love their costumer service (I go to the one in Marlborough, MA) and they have great quality jewelry.
GL!
My engagement ring is from Hannoush. DH had two stones to work with (one from each side of the family) and went there and designed what he wanted. They were really good for all of that. However, something in how they do their white gold stuff is not good, IMO. It has changed back to yellow fairly quickly. I had it redipped right before the wedding, only 10 months after getting engaged. They told me it was because of how it reacted with my skin, but my wedding ring hasn't changed at all, while my e-ring has turned yellow again.
My wedding ring is from Long's. I would definitely recommend going there. They have a really good selection, and if you go during one of their wedding band events, they bring in even more. That's what I did and was able to find my incredibly unique wedding band. I wasn't able to find anything so unique anywhere else.
(Sorry it's big, but this way you can see the detail of my wedding band).
Out of curiosity, why does it matter if they eventually go out of business? It's not like they provide a warranty on your ring, and any jeweler can do basic maintenance stuff like cleaning or polishing. Just something to think about so you can broaden your options. I think it's more important to find the ring you want at the right quality than worry about what will happen to the vendor 5-10 years down the line.
You might want to check out the diamond building in Downtown Crossing. Basically there are a ton of jewelers housed in one location. I can't help much with other local suggestions as my rings came from CA where we got married.
That's what I went to! Thanks for finding her the info MrsC :-)
JCam: That ring is STUNNING!
Rock: I was concerned about the jeweler's future because my E ring does have a warranty- If anything happens to it (even if it's lost or stolen, or it falls apart) it is taken care of for me, completely free. I take it in to have yearly inspections, and they size it, re-dip the white gold, buff out scratches, tighten the diamonds, clean it, and check its overall condition, at no charge. They even do appraisals for my insurance company. I don't have to be concerned if something happens to it, because the jeweler takes care of it for me.
To All: It sounds like Long's is the place to check first, so I'll be looking them up this afternoon, and see about their event in March, but since the wedding is in April, I may have to make a decision much sooner. I will also check out the other listed jewelers, to see what kind of prices and selections they offer. Thank you ladies SO much for such detailed info- it's overwhelming being in such a new city in this stage of our lives. But I can't wait to start looking around up here.
Thanks! That sucks that the wedding band event probably won't work for you. I hope you are able to find what you are looking for still though! From what I understand they can get everything they show at the event any time, but you have to look through books they have. I think.
Wow, that's amazing and very unusual! Do you even need to insure your ring then, since they'll replace it if it's lost or stolen?
If it's stolen from my home, they expect my insurance to cover it. If I'm mugged- they replace it. It's also inscribed with a serial number (both the primary diamond and the band with the smaller stones), so that any jeweler who sees it will ask for the documentation, and if it is not provided, they generally report it to the police then contact the original jeweler. Shane Co is an amazing place, and everyone is so friendly- and they really aren't that expensive!! I mean, my ring cost more than it would at Kay or Helzberg, but a lot less than most private jewelers.
