did anyone ever make this? i have two loaves in the oven right now; hopefully it's good! it's a chain-letter type thing where wesomeone has to give you a 'starter' bag and the recipe. and then when you make yours you create more 'starter' bags to give to others. but only the Amish know how to make a starter bag
Re: Amish friendship bread
Yum! You can freeze the starters. We have 3 or 4 in the freezer right now. Have you ever tried it with lemon pudding mix instead of the vanilla? Yummy!
I might have to make some this weekend.....
Yep, stick a starter or two in the freezer and you're good to go (when you pull it out, you just act as if that is day one). I looooove the bread; it just gets overwhelming after a while when you've got bread and starters constantly!
Billysgirl - my stepmom uses chocolate pudding mix to make chocolate friendship bread. It's delicious!

thanks for the ideas, ladies! i didn't even think about freezing the starters, yay!
I'm told that if you talk to an Amish person about Amish friendship bread they have no idea what you're talking about
I actually found a recipe for the starter in a friend's cookbook. I can get it and post it if anyone wants. I never tried it, but I assume it works. And I totally wish I had seen this earlier! I have a couple starters in my freezer now and this would have been a perfect day to bake it.
You just knead it for the first few days... I think the first day you add anything to it is day 5 or so? I have the directions in my kitchen if you really want to know.
And don't forget - just because you got the bag on Wednesday, that might not necessarily have been day one. If the person who gave it to you on Wednesday had split the starters on Tuesday, then Tuesday was day one. They should have written day one's date on the bag for you.
