anyone cruise without passport (recently)

I know it isn't strictly required as long as I have a birth certificate, but the ship's website says it is much easier and that if you didn't have a passport you would face delays at disembarkation.

Just wondering if anyone has  experience with this! When we went on our honeymoon cruise I had a passport, but it has my maiden name on it and I don't feel like spending the time or money to get it fixed if it's not really necessary. thanks

Re: anyone cruise without passport (recently)

  • You can still use your passport that has your maiden name as long as you book everything for the cruise in your maiden name.
  • Are you going out of the country? If yes, then you need a passport. It surprises me that the ship's website says you can still use a BC because I'm almost positive that is not the case. Also, there's always the chance of not being able to get on/off the ship because you don't have a passport.

Have you bought your cruise tickets already? Your other option is to buy your ticket in your maiden name, then you wouldn't have to pay to change your passport at least until it expires.

  • hmm- I never thought of booking under my maiden name, but that may get confusing.

Since we are going out of US and coming back to same port they say it is not necessary but definitely recommended. But if anything should happen where I couldn't get back on the boat at a port I might be in trouble. Ugh. Why didn't I just renew it within a year when it was still free!?

Nope, I don't think it would be confusing. I did this a year or two ago and it was fine, there were no problems.

  • yep definitely book in your maiden name.  at all of the ports that we have been to, they asked for passports and gave people who didn't have one a REALLY hard time.

alethea-they keep pushing back the date for cruise passengers, i believe it's 6/10 now that it'll be required.

  • I personally would get a new passport, or do the whole thing under your maiden name.  What if there was an emergency and you need to catch a plane out of a foreign country mid-cruise?
  • I went on a cruise last April without a passport.  We also had plans to go this April(until I got PG) without a passport.  Our travel agent said that they are still not manditory as long as you go out and into the country through the same port.  I had no problems at all at disembarkation.

  • I took a cruise with a girlfriend in April and didn't have a passport and never faced any problems.  But, someone did bring up a good point.  If, for some reason, you went on an excursion and something happened and you got left, you're SOL because you can't fly into the US.

If you can book in your maiden name I'd recommend it, but it's not necessary.

We went on a cruise this September and this was our experience. You only need a passport for a cruise if you are doing an open loop cruise (different embarkation and disenbarkation)

  • I cruised twice last year and my passport has my maiden name on it. I booked everything in my married last name since my id was in my married name, but i took my birth certificate and passport with me just in case they had any questions..No one questioned anything and I had no problems.  You dont need a passport unless you are cruising somewhere and returning back to a different location than you left at. ( the group i went with did not have passports and we just went as recently as Dec and planning on one in June )_
