if you have food intolerances...

how did you figure them out?

i was easily able to identify that eating eggs makes me sick. the reaction was almost immediate. but i've been having a lot of other stomach issues lately which i'm thinking is another food intolerance i haven't quite figured out. this one isn't obvious though, so I'm not sure how to go about determining the culprit.do i pick something and eliminate it from my diet all together for a while and see if i feel better? sorry this is kinda a stupid question Stick out tongue or maybe i should be going to the doctor... but i'm not quite who to see? GP?

Re: if you have food intolerances...

  • how stinky for a food blogger to have food intolerance!

I'd probably go and talk to the doctor about it. Seems a lot of people have the gluten issues these days so maybe try and eliminate that one and see what happens.

  • Maybe an allergist?  I always thought I was lactose intolerant, but my allergist found that I actually have a mild milk allergy.
  • Taytee (I think) has posted about an elimination diet.

As far as mine go, I started making a mental note when I would get a headache immediately after eating.  I'm allergic to food preservatives and red food coloring, which would have taken a ton of time and effort to figure out with the elimination diet.  A journal would have worked just as well, if not sooner, but I have a hard time following-through with journals.

  • I just recently developed an allergy to shrimp Crying

I figured it out by keeping a food journal and notating how I felt after eating.

See I've been making mental notes for weeks now but I'm not noticing a common thread...  maybe i need to actually write it down and eliminate eating out at all for awhile so I know exactly what's in my food.

  • I vote allergist!  When I went to one, I found out that I had an allergy to spinach, onions, and tree nuts.  Which was really, REALLY sad since I loved all three.  I had to cut them out of my diet, and can now automatically tell if any of those ingredients are present in just about anything.

monski - did you have suspicions about food allergies specifically for those things or did they just do an all around test for common food allergies? (similar to what they do for trees, grass, etc)?

  • I had a suspicion, but I didn't know what it was. They did the exact same gridded poke test that they did for trees/grass, and all at once, too!  I was one itchy gal (especially with the cat needle, eek!).  Thank goodness for benadryl spray!
  • ok guess i'll start at the allergist then to see if i have an actual allergies. if not, i'll have to figure out some sort of food journal to figure out the intolerance...

    thanks!

  • Start with the allergist I agree.  Then just start eliminating things.  Usually they recommend milk first.  Which is hard, cheese is my favorite, but Sharp cheddars have less lactose than soft cheeses.

If milk doesn't work they start taking away the good stuff....like wheat.  When they were taking foods away from me they always say do it for at least 1 week.  A food journal is a great idea.

  • I was able to self diagnose myself (I'm allergic to gluten) because of it being genetic, I already knew my mom was allergic, so after eliminating it and putting a small amount back in after being off of it for a while, I was sure that was it.
  • I did the elimination diet, per my Dr.'s advice.  Milk was the first to go and when I re-introduced it I got SICK.  So...bye bye ice cream and all other delicious milk products!  It's been totally worth it, though, not to have horrible stomach aches anymore.

  • thanks everyone for the advice!

figuring out the egg intolerance was so easy, this one is trickier that i just haven't been sure where to start.

i actually needed to call my OB about a prescription so i asked for a referral and i've now made an appt with a gastroenterologist who can test me for food allergies, and help me figure out the issue! appt isn't until later this month but hopefully they'll be able to help me figure it out! in the meantime i'm gonnna start a detailed food journal and track my symptoms!
