THANK YOU! Need honest opinions (nursery colors)

I need honest Novembie opinions here...I'm not great at picking colors.

Are these colors ok for a neutral nursery?  I plan on having solid color bedding in a cream color, cream curtains, and will accent with other colors (blues/greens, or purples/pinks) once the baby arrives and we know what the sex is.

There's 2 shades of periwinkle.  Should I go lighter or darker?  The room gets East and South sun, so it is a brighter room.

This is the inspiration.  It is a wolf cub.  We will be hanging more real baby animal pics on the walls.  Hopefully i can find some with more of the grassy green colors too.

  • I picked the lighter.  I think the lighter will balance out the "natural" colors that you will find in the prints.  Working in some yellows and greens I think will be really pretty for either boy or girl.
  • I think the periwinkle top color is throwing me off. That is super girly looking to me. But then the bottom left blue color is very boy...I dont get gender neutral out of this at all though.

  • It may be my computer screen but two darker colors look like they have a purple undertone which scream girls room to me.

well - crap.  I am stuck.  I can't do green b/c dh and i have a green bedroom just across the hall - and I don't want to be the "house with green bedrooms",   My kitchen is yellow, so that is out too.

Maybe I'll just paint the walls a soft tan, have cream bedding & curtains, and add color later.

Sometimes I wish we were finding out the sex.

Thanks for the honesty.  It looks like the vote is nearly split on the darker/lighter thing too...

They're definitely not purple.  I was worried that they were too blue.

Back to the Sherwin Williams store...I need a new idea.

  • Do you play around with colors online?

I know Benjamin Moore's site lets you do that... I'm sure the SW store could color match if you loved something or get it close...

    GL!

  • I know you ruled out yellow, but I really like this color...

  • I dont see why you cant do green and yellow...just do different shades!

My living room, kitchen and hallway are all the same green and I think it looks fine!

There are other gender neutral colors as well, like orange paired with grey would look awesome!

  • I think either shade looks gender neutral...until you add the photos. Blue & white is fine for a girl IMO, but all the brown/greens in the photos kinda scream hunting lodge/boy. I agree with Agent about different shades of yellow or green - maybe a mint green or pale yellow? Or what if you stick to the periwinkle and do illustrations of baby animals? They can still be realistic if that's what you're trying to do, but just taking away the 'woodsy' feel would be super cute AND they could be in any color you want! Even silhouettes would be adorable. A certain designer on etsy could totally make them for you...*points to self* cough cough Wink
  • I picked lighter with the reasoning that if you are going to have animal baby pics up in the room the more "close to nature " the colors are the better.  BTW, I LOVE that you are putting up baby animal pics in the nursery, this is definitely something I would do.

  • I just want to point out that cream bedding + diaper blow out = nasty looking bedding.  It sounds really pretty, but I think I would go with a print that can hide stains or something darker.  JMO.
  • You are all very wise.  Smile

I talked to DH (he was wavering on the periwinkle all along) and we agreed that perhaps soft yellow walls, cream curtains, and a soft green patterned bedding pattern would work.

Thank you for the advice and tips.  I really have a hard time planning rooms and I end up with really awkward combinations - as you can see!

We also agreed that we have time to figure this all out.  I was freaking b/c friends and family had been repeatedly asking me about nursery colors and what we were planning - and I didn't have a plan.  At 16 weeks...I don't really need a plan yet.  We have time!

Kristy - I was planning on getting wall letters from you once baby has a name!

  • I love buttery yellow walls.
