Need ideas for a 30 th bday party...

My sister is turning 30 and myself and my family are throwing her a bday party.     We don't know what to do as far as decorations are concerned.

We dont want to do the streamers and " i am 30 banner" type decor. We are having it at moms house and its not the biggest place so my idea of setting up soem tables in a long line and decorating it with nice linens and maybe some flowers and small candles is out of the question.  She has a small dinning room and living room.   So I know all of us sitting down to eat together is out of the question, everybody will be scattered aroudn the house.

Any ideas? i'm open to anything right now.

We are also stuck on what to get her as a gift but this one might be harder for anybody to help me with.

  • Would it be possible to have small tables through out the house, instead of all together?  It might help you with the flow and keep people moving.  Dining room for food, living room for a drink, kitchen counter for dessert, etc.

I think a few supermarket bouquets in simple vases that your mom might have around the house would be a nice touch.

In order to set a nice mood, I would suggest creating a nice playlist on an mp3 player.  How about bossa nova and modern jazz?

Also, if you can help it, kill any overhead lights and use lots of lamps for lighting.  I think you said that you can't use candles.

    HTH!

Oh, and as far as gift goes, what does she like?  Is she a fitness buff?  Maybe spinning shoes.  Does she like electronics?  How about a portable DVD player.

  • Could you pick a color scheme and revolve around that? Like, get everything pink: flowers, balloons, wrapping paper, etc. Or green or blue or whatever color she likes.

Secondly, a spa gift card would be a nice group gift. You could treat her to a spa day and get a gc that would cover a massage, facial, and manicure/pedicure.

    Good luck! :)

  • I think that a color scheme would make it easier to decorate. You could pick one color or a few and try to stay in the theme, then everything looks like it "goes"

  • How many people are you planning to invite?

What about doing a appetizer, drinks & dessert party.  There are sooo many ideas out there for meals made smaller these days.  Sliders, soup shooters, bite sized everything.  That way you can set up the table with the all the food and then people can really mix and mingle.

I'm not talking cheese and cracker type apps...but real dinner ideas made bite sized.

As for decor I'd really dress the dining table up with a great centerpiece and all the food and then have another table as the bar & then of course a dessert take with the cake.

  • I love the idea of small tables throughout the place. I did this recently and also used real tableclothes, no plastic or paper! Those cheap parer ober the hill ones are tacky imo and we wanted something nicer. I found fabric at Joannes and a friend just sewed the yards together and we had beautiful cheap tableclothes.

Using real plates, silverware, etc. and a small bouquet of flowers on each table makes a nice touch.

    Have fun!
