Where can I find.....

Emnenthaler cheese and gruyeye? Am I looking for blocks of cheeses?  And does anyone know a round about price range.  I wasn't sure if Kroger would carry these or if I would need to go to a specialty store.

I am making cheese fondue this weekend and have never done this.  I don't want to end up running all over town trying to find this stuff.

TIA

Re: Where can I find.....

  • The Kroger in Anderson has a new cheese "market" starts with a M.  Hyde Park may have it as well, not sure.

I do know Jungle Jim's has a HUGE cheese section.

No clue on price, sorry.  I would call and ask so you dont have to run all over town.  Good luck!!! :)

  • Kroger stores with Murrays cheese applications have a bag of pre mixed cheese for fondue - they also have premade that is actually really good. I know they have Murrays at the Newport, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Liberty Township, and Anderson Locations. I am pretty sure any of the higher volume stores will have the premade fondue. If you are looking to purchase just the cheese they should have them as well. Look at the Cheese Olive Island that is usually facing the deli service counter. (can you tell I work for them :) ) - I know Trader Joes also carries the premade fondue around Christmas, so its worth a call if you are close to one. In my opinion, there is a lot that can go wrong with making it yourself. Do you ahve a fondue pot? If so, smash some garlic and rub it along the bottom of the pan area before adding the cheese. We love the flavor of this.

Let me know if you are having trouble (or if you have a store in mind, and I can look for you :)

  • to add a little on price - both cheeses are pretty middle range (9-11 dollars a pound but can run higher depending on the location and the type)
  • You can get those two cheeses at any grocery that has an import section. I know that bigg skytop has it. I can even find it at the Harrison kroger, which has a very limited selection.

I do recommend the Murray's cheese. The people in the red jackets have been trained for added cheese knowledge.

  • I second the pre shredded bags that you can find at Kroger of the 2 cheeses mixed. It makes preparation so easy. Hyde Park Kroger definitely has it. You can also find blocks of these cheeses at Trader Joes and Whole Foods.  Also, try and get Kirsch, not kirschwaser. Pure kirsch is so much better (though, I often use the watered down version for price/convenience).
  • Fresh market will also have them. But Jungle Jim's is probably your best bet for selection if not price.

I didn't know you worked for Kroger.  What do you do there?

We do have a fondue pot.  How do the pre mixed packages of cheese work?  Is it just the cheese ready to go or would I still add in the additional ingrediants of my receipe? Like: white wine, lemon juice, flour, kirsch, etc.

I live in Bridgetown/Western Hills.  I normally shop at the Dent location.

  • I would try Jungle Jims or the Kroger Fresh Fare.  Maybe Trader Joes or Fresh Market.

  • You still have to add your ingrediants to the bagged cheese. But, it saves you loads of time shredding and measuring. And, I suggest using a fresh garlic clove to swipe all over the fondue pot just before pouring in the melted cheese fondue.  Now I want fondue tonight!
