Co-worker with hygiene issues. WWYD?

So I have a coworker - we'll call him Guy.  Guy is the programmer for the software I use to do my job every day.  We've been making some big changes to the software and because I'm pretty much constantly using it, I tend to find the bugs in it.  We're also working up a form that our customers can use to streamline our info entry process because right now, it is a mess and we can't turn things around fast enough because we're always waiting on some missing info.  Because of above conditions, Guy has been spending a bit of time in my cube talking about stuff.  The problem is that he's got major B.O.  It is bad enough that it makes me a little queasy.  If he's just standing still - it is mostly ok but he tends to put his arm up on the shelf thing I have and then it I end up with wafts of stinky pit smell.

What would you do about Guy?  I really don't think he knows that he smells.  Should I say something?  Should I just casually leave some deodorant in his office (haha, this is totally tongue in cheek - I'd never actually do it)?  Just hold my breath until he leaves?  Right now I'm trying my best to avoid having him come visit me.  Any thoughts?

  • Without offending him, I don't know if there's anything you can do--even if it's anonymously.  There's someone in my office with major issues but I can't say a word.  Sorry.
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • Is there a male in the office that seems to be closer to him?  It seems like guys take that kind of stuff better from other guys.  That's what I'd look for first... it seems kinda juvenile *hey, can you tell your buddy he needs deoderant* but that would be the best way for me.
  • Does your job have a dedicated HR office/person? You could bring it up with them. They might a) give you suggestions for how to deal with it yourself or b) call him in and tell him people have complained and he needs to use some deodorant.

Semi-related: I worked at a resort in VT for many years (HS-College) that often got employees from Russia, Australia, South Africa, etc. Some of the foreign staff were unaware of American customs/hygiene and smelled like B.O. so badly, particularly a few of the Russian girls who worked in the kitchen (double yuck-hot kitchen makes them sweat extra...). They (the owners of the resort) made my poor friend (who is Russian-born) give them deodorant and explain how it works and that people are really offended by B.O. in America! She was so embarrassed.

Karen- can I have you remind DH of that next time he gets annoyed by my wisdom?

Yes, followed by "Karen told me so.  She's always right."

    Done!

  • You ladies are hillarious!  :)  The B.O. issue seems to be a recent development - maybe he needs to go to the store but hasn't had time??  Oh how I hope this is true.  It is so akward to discuss - totally agree. *sigh*  I guess if it doesn't get better, I'll maybe talk to our HR lady and see what she has to say.  I dont' want people to be like "wheeewie did you get a whiff of Guy today??" either because that isn't nice.
  • You could also get one of those airwick mini air freshener dispensers that sprays when it senses motion and put it facing where he stands.  When he comes to your desk it'll spray and hopefully help the smell a little until HR or his friend gets around to talking to him.
  • Can you keep some febreeze in your office to spray when he's gone?  Or put one of those air fresheners that spritz out spray every 15 min or so.
