Re: Um, opening ceremonies...

  • i think Kris' cousin is one of the fiddlers :-).
  • That's awesome!  I still don't "get it" though. And the word that was bleeped out began with an S and ended in Hit.

I LOVED Vancouver when I visited, huge fan of Canada, I just don't get what fiddlers with flames coming out of their shoes have anything to do with anything.

  • Dude, welcome to the Maritime provinces. And, as one of my friends was one of those choreographers for the dancing, I'm just going to point out that the Riverdance *** is Irish, and what was on tv was Scottish. Just so you know.

Oh. And parties with fiddlers and dancing in the kitchen actually happen. As someone who was born and spent many years out in Nova Scotia, the parties are awesome.

  • Whoa, no offense to anyones cousins or choreographers :)

  • China's spectacular opening cermony was a hard act to follow. I unfortunately was not all that impressed with Vancouver's.

I have always wanted to go to Nova Scotia. I have no idea why...I think I just like the way it sounds out loud! Stick out tongue

  • I liked the big sparkly bear. =)

You know, as spectacular as Beijing's opening ceremony was, I really liked how different Canada's was. It was nice to see Canada's diversity being spotlighted and celebrated. I think also with the horribly tragic death of the Georgian luger, something as flamboyant as the Beijing ceremony would have been really hard to enjoy.

LOL! Coincidence but, I have the replay of the Opening Ceremony playing on the tv in the background right now and they'd JUST started the Riverdance thing when I opened this message.

I was like *reads your post*...."hmmmm, hang on...I think she's referring to what's on tv now"

*Walks to living room to check*

    "Yep, haha!"

  • I hadn't realized that the tap dancing fiddlers had anything to do w/ the culture of Canada, it was my own ignorance.  When I said I was on board before that, I was really digging the nods to the First Nationers, the land and how important the earth is to the culture, I really loved how they turned the floor into water and then BOOM tap dancing! It makes a little more sense now.

Maybe it's your love of Anne of Green Gables?  Nova Scotia is a neighbor of Prince Edward Island. :)

  • But really, the slam poetry was out of this world!  So cool......it even made my eyes water up!

  • Yeah, the Martime provinces were settled primarily by the Scots (hence the name Nova Scotia - new Scotland), so fiddling and highland dancing are a huge part of the culture of that part of the country. As a Bluenoser (that's someone born in Nova Scotia), I can't help but step up and be proud of where I come from! I mean, I know you didn't mean any offence - not many people outside of Canada know exactly how multicultural we are - and how that multicultural tradition stretches back hundreds of years. In fact, the Newfie accent is about as close to what the Gaelic accent used to sound like 200 years ago as you can find in the world today. Because they're so isolated, the accent hasn't changed as much as it has in Scotland and Ireland.

Nova Scotia is beautiful, Lisa! It's not really like PEI, because it has a much more dynamic history - it's where the Cajuns in Louisiana came from! When the French settlers (the Acadians) there were kicked out by the British, they fled down to the southern US states.  Some eventually returned, but most stayed down there. So really, the Cajun culture and the Acadian culture stem from that area. It was also the destination of most of the slaves who escaped on the Underground Railroad. There was a town there that former slaves started called Africaville. Not many other places in the world can claim to being so tolerant at that time - most other places in Canada certainly weren't.

Sorry, I'm yammering on about history here!  You get me started, I have a hard time stopping.

  • Kaesha, don't apologize for sharing some history about Nova Scotia! I find it really fascinating actually!

*Puts Nova Scotia down on list of places to visit*

How far a drive or flight is it from Toronto?

  • Oooh, about a 15-18 hour drive or a 3 hour flight. The province is pretty tiny, but there are all these great little bay villages you can stop off at. And Cape Breton has the most stunning scenery.

And for the pirate/treasure lovers in you, it also has Oak Island. It's a mystery I've been obsessed with since I was a kid.

  • Thanks Kaesha, you actually taught me something I didn't know :)

I get fired up too, no worries :)

No worries K Shiz :) The really great thing about Canada is we are diverse in soooo many cultures, and think that makes us very proud that we can share as one country.

    Very well said Lisa Yes

I think one of favourites from the evening was the whales and their blowholes, the "We are More" slam poetry and KD Lang singing Hallejulah!

  • The tap dancing made Russ and I really excited to visit Nova Scotia next year (my brother and SIL are moving there for a year).

I must say I wasn't a huge fan of the opening ceremonies and I think it's because I was expecting it to be more like Bejing.  I did love certain aspects of it though (the whales, the maple leaves, the dancing and the first nations component).  But I thought that it was a bit disorganized (the first nations chiefs missing in the begining and the arm not rising at the end when the cauldron was being lit).

But we have our canadian mittens on today!  I wish we were able to get down see some of them!

  • For what it's worth, I didn't like the ballet thing w/ Sarah MacLauchlan before the tap dancing.

    ...no offense to ballerinas :)

I'm actually glad that I misspoke, I think it started an interesting conversation.

God, yes! Who shows up late to the opening ceremonies?I wonder how much of it was a political statement. Hmm

It's funny, when Beijing happened, VANOC was all like "Erm... yeah. We don't have the budget for that." I was actually expecting a lot worse.

The only segment I didn't really like the prairie one (not enough happened)... and Nelly's really horrible lipsynching.

  • Oh wow, I know those photos are photoshopped but you can tell the spot is gloriously beautiful!

Told hubby today that we're going to Novia Scotia next time we go back to TO (or if/when we move back).

  • I really enjoyed the whole thing.  I think the NBC coverage didn't do a good job explaining the part about the Nova Scotia segment so I could definitely understand the confusion.

I love the nod to the First Nations culture - from the opening ceremony to the look of the medals - so neat!
