Re: Foodies - Figs?

  • We eat them with honey and cheese. I've got nothing else. Sorry!

  • I think ESF has something with figs in her blog... *scratches head*
  • I have a salad with figs and a complicated cake with figs in my blog.

But, I like figs sliced on plain yogurt and drizzled with honey.

Or...I did this last week.  Cut up a couple shallots, and saute them in olive oil for a few minutes.  Add 1/2 pound of sliced figs, a half a cup or so of liquid (I used chicken broth and a splash of balsamic vinegar, but red wine would probably be divine), salt and pepper, and some fresh thyme.  Simmer on low heat for 20 minutes or so, until it gets thick and jam like.

I served it on pork chops, then used the leftovers the next day on a ham sandwich.

    Yum.

  • I've done them broiled once. Cut in half, sprinkle or dip in sugar and give them a quick roast, cut side up, until the sugar is caramelized. I bet that would be good with ricotta and honey or goat cheese. Mine were not great when I made them because they were over-ripe. I have issues with over the hill fruit :(?
  • I roasted them with a pork roast once, it was out of a magazine. Pears and figs and onions and maybe apples? Threw it all in a roasting pan w/the meat.

Does anyone know if there are non-sweet figs? I could swear I've had ones before and that were kind of nutty, and not sweet at all. More like a chestnut. Maybe they're a certain kind?
