Grad School Girls (or Smarty Pants among us....)

I'm quoting a text for a paper that utilizes itallics.  I know you sometimes have to state something along the lines of (itallics in original text) after the quote or something like that... but I've never learned specific rules about doing that.

Can anyone enlighten me?

(I hate all this APA, MLA bull.)

Re: Grad School Girls (or Smarty Pants among us....)

  • Sorry, I'm in science. We don't do grammar. lol.

  • What format are you writing in? APA or MLA?
  • This is from my APA book....

"If you want to emphasize a word or words in a quotation, italisize the word or words.  Immediately after the italisized words, insert brackets the words italics added, that is [italics added]

    Example:

And if the itallics were in the original work, itallicize it in my paper, and don't make a note at all?

  • This is from my APA manual....

"If you want to emphasize a word or words in a quotation, italisize the word or words.  Immediately after the italisized words, insert within brackets the words italics added, that is [italics added]

    Example:

    Miele (1993) found the following:

The "placebo effect," which had been verified in previous studies, disappeared when behaviors were studied in this manner.  Furthermore, the behaviors were never exhibited again [italics added], even when reel [sic] drugs were administered.  Earlier studies (e.g. Abdullah, 1984; Fox, 1979) were clearly premature in attributing the results to a placebo effect. (p. 276)

Does that make any sense or help at all? Big Smile

  • Holy crap why did it post 3 times?!?!?!?  My internet is all jacked up...
  • Okay according to APA....

Use italics for introduction of a new, technical, or key term or label (after a term has been used once, do not italicize)

So if it is the first time you are siting their origianl work I would italicize it then site it, but if/when you use it again you don't have to italicize it, just site it.

  • lol...I spelled italicize wrong.....so smart....

I think you're right. If it is in the text, and you're using it as a quote, you don't need to make a note to explain the italics. I think it's self explanatory.

  • sorry I had to get off for a bit, but my APA manual says the same as Kristina's...so ditto to her pp

I'm about 99.9% sure you are right - just italicize, don't note it. When is your paper due? I can ask our editor at work but we aren't back in until Tuesday...

  • Thanks ladies! I appreciate your help!
