anyone have pets in an apt?

We are looking to adopt a small dog this coming spring. I am more interesting then my DH but that is neither here nor there..Anyways does anyone else have a pup in an apt? How does that work for you do you have enough room for everyone? We have a good size apartment and most likely moving once the lease is up in July to a bigger place but I just wanted to get feedback..TIA we are thinking about a boston if that helps hehe

Re: anyone have pets in an apt?

  • We live in a condo and we have a cat. This has been fine.

I know others who live in apartments and have dogs. To my knowledge it has not been a problem for them.

The only thing I would check is your lease/apartment policy. Make sure you are allowed to have a pet and what (if any) the additional fees are.

  • We've got a 45lb lab mix in a pretty small apartment (maybe 800sq ft?).  Its fine.  She has her little bed between our couches and there is plenty of room for us all.  She is obviously  much bigger then a Boston so I think you'd be fine.
  • We've had our miniature schnauzer in our apartment for the last 2 years without any problems...

  • I am in a townhouse now,but I had my Shih Tzu in an apartment for several years and it was totally fine. The only things that suck are 1) they will keep at least a portion or your pet deposit whether or not your pet does any damage (this is my experience), and 2) if you live on the second or third floor, the extra trips to walk the puppy when he cries in the middle of the night are a bit rough. Other than that, it is no problem at all having a pet in an apt. Good luck!
  • We've had apartments/rented condos the entire time we've had our dog.  She's a 25-pound whippet/lab mix.

When we first got her, and in the place we just left, we were on the ground floor and had a grassy fenced area with a 6-8 foot fence.  This was heaven because we could just let her out to use the bathroom!  But, other places we have not had that and as the pp said the trips outside can get to be a pain (no matter what floor you're on), but our sweet girl is worth it.

As for space, it's been fine.  Sometimes finding a spot for her food & water is a challenge - in one place we had it in the bathroom, but again it's not something that would make me not want to have her.

  • We have a dog (20ish pound rat terrier), and 2 cats in our apartment.   It isn't a problem.  This is the third apartment I've lived in  with the dog, but this is the 1st one on the 2nd floor.  Living on the first floor is much nicer :)

  • I've never had a problem with a pup taking up too much room but be careful what type of breed you get. If they are barkers or hard to potty train you may have more problems then space. Or, if they are super hyper you may have to be ready to take them on long walks. Just do your homework and you shouldn't have any problems :-)

     HTH
