Anyone live in/near Sudbury

Hi Ladies -

DH and I are moving to the Boston area, and were house hunting this past weekend.  We saw a nice house in Sudbury, which we are definitely considering.  It's in a great neighborhood, and we like that Sudbury has a good school system, and isn't a bad commute for DH (he works in Waltham - so it's about 20 minutes away).

The only drawback is that the town center doesn't seem walkable.  I've always lived in towns where I could walk to the town center, and get food/coffee/etc, and do errands.  While there seems to be quite a bit in Sudbury, our realtor said it isn't really a community where people walk to town.  I kind of think I would miss that.

Wondering if anyone else has experience with this - and what their thoughts are.  TIA  :)

Re: Anyone live in/near Sudbury

  • Hi Beth.  I went through the same thing.  H and I lived in Winthrop before moving out to Chelmsford.  In Winthrop I could walk ANYWHERE in town.  I could walk to get coffee, grocery store, and all the restaurants.  It was a perfect town for pedestrians.  When we moved to Chelmsford that was the thing I missed the most.  Our town center had sidewalk just around the stores. Two years ago they put in sidewalk from town center going down the street...we still don't know if they will put sidewalk in as far as we are, but I am hoping.

For us it was worth giving up the easy access to town for a home with a large plot of land and great schools. Good luck!

  • I think with most towns out in this direction, if you live close enough to the center of town you can walk in, but the further out you get the less sidewalks there are. Personally I have never lived where you could just walk to town so I don't know it the other way, but I don't mind not being able to. Well I guess I could, but it would be quite the long walk to run errands haha.

  • It's really just the nature of most of the suburbs here.  Sudbury is a great town with great schools and IMO, that would mean more than being about to walk to get coffee Smile

  • I love Sudbury. It's a great town and close to the amenities in natick/framingham. Taxes aren't out of control. I hear what you mean about walking to town, but I've never been in a neighborhood where I could do that, so I don't miss it.
  • The only time I've been to Sudbury was to visit the Jewelry Exchange so I don't know too much about the center of town. But I live in Hudson, not too far from Sudbury, and where DH and I live, we can walk anywhere. We walk to the grocery store, two great breakfast restaurants, coffee shop, downtown, etc...

We're also located on the Assabet River Rail Trail so we can walk that and not worry about traffic. I totally understand how nice that can be. When we moved out of Hudson back to my parents house for a summer in Mendon, I missed being able to walk everywhere. I love being back here.

We don't have kids yet and probably won't for another few years so I don't know much about the school system in these areas.

    GL!!

  • Sudbury is a great town, we have friends that live there. They aren't near town though.

Natick also has a nice little down town. There are always people walking around the green which is near Park Street Ice Cream (the best)!

Wellesley has a great down town too. More expensive than Sudbury though.

  • I'm going to ecco some of the other ladies. I grew up in a town where there really wasn't a walkable downtown area. In the town DH and I lived before now did, and while we would go for walks and walk through the downtown area, we didn't really utilize it. The school system isn't great there and overall we didn't live the town so we moved. Now we live in a town without a walkable downtown either. We don't mind not having it. A lot of the suburbs will be this way, especially since a lot of the towns are rather large and the changes of living near the center or shops is a lot slimmer. But in the end, only you can decide if you will miss it enough not to move there.
