Those of you with cats (or have had cats...)

Any of you experience problems with chewing?? You would think I had a puppy living in our house! Cali has recently taken up a new hobby in chewing our shoes. First it was M's sandals, and now my sandals & running shoes : ( I called our vet and they didn't recommend much of anything except to make sure she has plenty of toys. Which she does. Any of you experienced this before? I'm at the end of my rope! I know it's partly our fault for leaving shoes out where she can get them but even when we put them away she finds them and drags them all over the place!

  • I saw your FB post, and we can definitely relate.  Lucy LOVES chewing things, particularly cords and PAPER / cardboard.  If we leave any sort of box out, it will be in a million tiny pieces by the end of the day.  Stick out tongue

  • My older cat, Eleanor, doesn't chew on things now, but she used to chew on my heels. Ruby (who is still under a year), chews on stuff. Her favorite things are thin cords (like headphone cords, phone charger cords...) so we've lost about 5 headphones and a modem cord (yeah, that wasn't any fun). She also loves DH's shoelaces - particularly the ones in his dress shoes (probably because they're thin). And sometimes she chews on my heels. We just make sure that everything is put away and in the closet (with closed doors). So she can't chew on anything.

We also got her one of those "fishing line" toys with a long pole, a string, and some feathers on the bottom - so she chews on that now. :)

  • My young cat chews flip flops. It's my fault for leaving them out though, usually they are on a door rack in the closet. Do you play with her at all? My cats don't really play together because the older one is blind and just gets irritated, so I feel bad and play with Gossamer all the time! He loves to run, we chase each other through the house every day. He'll fetch when he wants to. That has really helped with him getting into things.
  • I don't think there is really much you can do except to just make sure your shoes are locked away tight!  Some cats just like to chew and when they find a texture that they like there is no stopping them.  My cat likes to chew on plastic bags and also rubber bands.  If he finds either of these things there is no stopping him and one time he even got a rubber band stuck in his intestines!  Just keep your kitty away from your shoes, that is really all you can do.

  • Yup...flip flops get killed at our house.

I wonder if that bitter apple spray for dogs works for cats as well? It stops Ladmo from chewing on stuff, you just spray that stuff on, and it doesnt ruin or discolor (at least or house) Maybe give it a wirl?
