Under the Sea/Little Mermaid party for 2nd birthday

Hi,
I am beginning to plan my daughter's 2nd bday.  I want to make it an "Under the Sea/Little Mermaid" theme because she loves Ariel.  I'm in the beginning phases of planning, so I just thought I'd throw this out on this board in case anyone has cute ideas for decor, menu, games, and favors.  The kids there will range in age from 1 to 7 and there will be lots of adults as well.
TIA!

Re: Under the Sea/Little Mermaid party for 2nd birthday

  • There is so much you could do for this idea. Get blue/green fabric and tule and use it to decorate the gift table.

    Under the Sea Treat
Each guest will get to eat their own personal aquarium! Pour blue jello into clear plastic cups and partially chill. When the jello is slightly thickened add a Gummi shark, fish and a few pieces of fruit by the foot or fruit leather (seaweed). Continue to chill until firm. Before serving, top with a wave shaped whipped cream swirl.

Suspend party streamers from the ceiling (vertically) as well as balloons to represent bubbles in the water. Cut streamers in varying lengths and shades of blue. Consider using "sticky-tak" to avoid making holes in your ceiling. Then add paper fish intermittently with the streamers.

    Shark Punch
This refreshing drink has a surprise bite lurking just beneath the surface! A day before the party, make shark ice cubes by freezing bite-sized gummy shark candy in ice cube trays filled with water. Let the trays stand at room temperature for an hour to remove the air bubbles before placing them in the freezer. The candy will dissolve slightly while freezing, tinting the cubes a soft pastel color.

Then, prepare blue drink mix according to package instructions (Kool-Aid works well). Pour the blue drink into a punch bowl and add 2 liters of ginger ale. When serving, place two or three shark cubes in a tall, clear glass for each child and fill with punch!

  • There are cute decorations/favors/party supplies/etc at Oriental Trading, and they're super-affordable. Here's the link to their "Sea Life" category for ideas...

I think you can probably find some fun ideas for DIY crafts and games there, too.

What a fun theme, sounds like a great time! =)

  • I saw in a magazine where they did helium balloons and then decorated them to look like fish...The filled the whole room up with them and it looked like you were under the sea, so cute!

  • It would be cute if you used grass skirts around the bottoms of the tables.

These balloons are too cute!  Are there going to be a lot of girls at the party?  How about making little aprons that they can wear over their clothes to look like a mermaid's fin?  Just a thought.  Good luck!

  • I had a luau for my son's birthday.  A few things I did was use straw mats (the cheap kind you use to lay in the sun on at the beach) on the table tops over my table clothes.  Some of the snacks were tropical shapes....goldfish crackers, sweedish fish candies, cheese cut in shapes of small fish (using tiny cookie cutters), I also found pasta shaped in palm trees - I made mac and cheese for the kids with that.  I did tropical fruit kabobs....using papaya, mango and melon balls. I did also make a tiki hut to go over the food table....(that was when I SAH and did now work full time!!!).  The rest of the stuff I did was more hawaiian.

    i LOVE those!

Could you label the basket that holds forks "dinglehoppers"

Since there is such a wide range of ages in the kids who are coming to the party you could play a "pass the fish/mermaid' game. When the music stops that child is out (I usually give a sticker to something to each kid as they are "out").

Another simple game for any age could be the freeze game (you could play "under the sea".

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • This is all great!  I will be sure to post after the party to share how this all turned out.  I LOVE those fish- how cute!!
