XP: for those of you who are teachers
For those of you who are teachers, where do you go to find resources to
revamp your courses? I teach college but don't have any teaching
courses in my degrees so I'm a bit lost here. I teach a very specific
crowd of 1st year nonmajor students and my classes are huge
so I am having a hard time find ways to make it more interactive. All
I do is lecture right now and I know they are bored and I am too. Any
ideas on where to go to find resources or learning tools for classes of
200-300 students? We're also converting to semesters and I'd love to
incorporate a bunch of new tools when we switch to make the course more
fun for all of us.
Re: XP: for those of you who are teachers
I am a teacher and usuaslly the school will send us to professional development trainings or they will have speakers that come to us...I google too...
What subject are you teaching? That might help us steer you in a good direction
I agree with you-- the more interactive a class can be, the more learning/thinking takes place.
Since your classes are so large, have you investigated online discussion tools? At Miami and NKU, I know they have Blackboard, which can be used as an online discussion forum for students. I've taken online classes where the only discussion that takes place is online; and while that's not as good as face-to-face discussion, it's still an opportunity for me to learn from my classmates as well as from the instructor (which is always a nice change of pace)
If you don't have access to Blackboard, investigate www.wikispaces.com. It's a collaborative website that also has the capacity to serve as an online discussion tool.
Good luck!
