Can I ask you a couple questions? Recently I started looking at and reading a bunch of different blogs. There are a lot of great ones out there. I have been thinking about starting a blog but everytime I go to create one, I talk myself out of it because I think "what will I write about". It seems like every blogger has their "thing" whether it be about the baby, their cooking, fashion, or beauty. I, however, have no "thing" to write about. Rather, any time I think about what I would write, its usually some type of vent (i.e. - the most recent one - my frustrations with trying to buy clothing online because I am forced to with my current location of residence). So... I guess my question is: if you have a blog, what do you write about? Did you find it hard to start writing and continue to have stuff to write about? Do people (other than family members/close friends) read your blogs? If so, how did they find out about it? I appreciate any insight you ladies have to offer.
Re: For those of you who have blogs...
I used to have one. It was a lot like what you're talking about... discussing things that happened during the day, venting about stuff, re-posting things I found online that I wanted to share.
I created it to keep in touch with my family because they're on the west coast. Eventually, I just sort of stopped posting. My job got busy, and I had less time for it.
I was thinking a few weeks ago about picking it up again. Could be fun!
I have one (link in siggy) that I started during wedding planning so a lot of it was about that, but now I just use it to voice my thoughts. If I see or read something interesting I'll post about it...or I'll just post about what's going on in my life. I do it more for myself as a type of journal so i can look back at it and remember things. I love going back and reading the wedding posts b/c it brings back all the excitement and feelings. I also use it to vent when I'm having a bad day or someone/something pisses me off.
I think I have around 14 followers that are all girls I met on the TK destination wedding board. I would suggest trying it and if you don't like it you don't have to keep up with it, but it will be there when you need an outlet
Mine (the personal one, not Pregosaur) is about, well...everything. Anything. Whatever strikes my fancy, really!
If anything, my "thing" is randomness lol. I'm not sure I'd be very good at a blog that was just about one thing (even though it might be more popular with readers). I write about life in Australia, my pets, books, cooking (or, more often, my cooking disasters lol), shopping, and whatever else has my attention that day.
Do I find it hard to start writing...yeah, sometimes. Some days it's easy, some days it's hard. I set a goal of 15 posts a month, which is approx a post every other day, and that helps me. Which reminds me, I should have posted something yesterday. Whoopsie.
There are definitely people outside of family and friends reading my blog...I think there are about 100 unique hits a day and something like 150 RSS subscribers. Which is practically nothing in terms of the internet lol, but still more than I have in family/friends. Some would have found it through the Knot/Nest, others through links from other blogs or googling, and I belong to a group called SITS which raises your profile a little as well. Something like BlogHER would do it even more, but I'm just not that dedicated.
I started my blog a year ago as a way to chronicle the details and photos associated with my pregnancy. I found that I was sending several different e-mails out to different family members, making several different calls, answering all the same questions. A blog was a great way to keep everyone informed, share sono pictues, detail baby gear research, etc.
It was first called "Growing Lima Bean."
Now, it's more like a daily photo blog about Alexa. What we do each day. Her firsts. Her milestones. Her cuteness. Videos of her doing cute things... I now call it "All About Alexa" but I never changed the url... Again, the audience is family and friends. It's nice to be able to look back at what we did, when. Also, it forces me to take photos! Lots of photos!
You could try one and see if you find your "voice" or "thing" before sharing it... Just experiment! HTH!
