So I've been trying to get up enough courage to tell our downstairs neighbor that her music and TV are too loud and if she can keep them down. Originally when we moved in she stopped me to ask if they were. I had only been there a day or two and wasn't settled enough to notice them. But within a few days it was clear they were. I mean this lady is about 50+ years old and listens to Power 106 and Kiis FM (Rap, hip hop, etc). at incredibly loud levels that you can hear them from either end of the complex. Eric's solution was to blast the surround sound when we listened to music, watched TV or play video games since you could hardly hear our own stuff with hers on. She also has a teenage daughter who does the same thing and sometimes will have the TV and stereo on at the same time trying to one up the other. Well I asked Eric to stop so that I can just ask her to keep it down and I she wouldn't have anything to blame on us.
Anyway, I went there this morning because her stereo was already pounding at 7:00 this morning and Eric was asleep (he's off today). When I asked her if she wouldn't mind lowering it her answer was okay. But you know I hear everything in your apartment too. She basically told us she could hear our conversations, us use the shower, walking, our TV and having sex
. I kept explaining that I was sorry about the TV and stereo but we've turned them up in the past just to be able to hear over hers. She obviously knew her systems were loud otherwise she wouldn't have mentioned them from the beginning. I'm just so embarassed that she said she could hear everything though. Eric doesn't care and thinks I shouldn't either. I mean it's not like we are really loud people. Plus it sounded like she was just making excuses by telling me all that. Now how do I get the thought of her hearing everything out of my head?!
Re: So Embarassed
Haha... sorry I don't mean to laugh, but it is sort of humorous that she would say that. Maybe you guys can try playing music or have the tv on when you're doing things you don't want her to hear.
I've wondered the same thing about our neighbors, since we live in a condo complex. I never hear anything from either of our neighbors (we're side by side, though) and I wonder if they are all just really quiet or if the walls are that thick. I'm hoping the walls are that thick.
Now I'm wishing I hadn't. I've lived in an apartment all my life and understand things can be less private than in a house. But I've never had anyone be so incredibly loud with their music from 6:30/7:00 in the morning until 11:00/11:30 at night.
The apartment we just moved out of had paper thin walls and we could hear everything that went on in our neighboring apartments, so of course I was always trying to be careful about loudly I talked. Jason didn't care, but I did.
From our bedroom you could hear the divorced guy next door talking to his animals, it was hilarious. I was always freaked out that other people were hearing everything that was going on in our apt. It is so so so nice to have a house now and not worry about it anymore!
I would say if you can't hear her talking and the such from your apartment, then I don't know how she could be hearing you. She was probably just acting defensive about the situation and made up stuff.

My thoughts exactly.
We have had noise problems in the past with our neighbors too. Our complex has, for lack of better words, "quiet hours" between 10 pm and 8 am. If our neighbors are obnoxious during that time the apt manager told me to call the security people and that they would come out and talk to them. We've done this several times - I think it helped.

This. Hope she is respectful and turns it down
