BR: another question for CDing mamas

If you're using cloth wipes, did you buy them or DIY them? And what are they made out of?

Buying them seems so expensive here, around $13-$24 for 4 wipes (here's a link), which means they're like $3-8 each. Considering how many we'll need, that's pretty expensive, even though they are obviously reusable.

A store near me currently has a set of 12 terry cloth flat CDs on sale for $13, so I was thinking of just buying those, cutting 2-3 wipes out of each flat and giving them a quick zigzag hem. That would make the price of each wipe more like $0.50, but I'm not sure if there's some reason I couldn't do it? Cloth wipes are basically just made of the same stuff (terry cloth, microfleece, whatever) as CDs, right? Or wrong?

  • You can totally DIY...I bought ours from Etsy seller Wooldins...they are organic and two ply...flannel on one side and a looped kind of terry jersey on the other.  You can SO DIY...just serge or zig zag the edges.  The ones I have are 8x8 which is a great size!

You can get flannel swaddling blankets and cut them up, etc.

    Here's easy instructions to DIY:

  • Oh yaaaay! I figured it wouldn't be a problem to do - I think I'll just make them myself then, since I'm going to have plenty of downtime. Stick out tongue I can't believe how much some of these companies are charging for a square of cloth...even if I use two different materials (like a terry on one side and flannel on the other), it will still be waaaaay cheaper than buying them.

  • totally DIY'able!

I made some out of a really soft towel that I accidentally ruined by washing with a new dark towel.  I also made some double sided flannel/fleece ones that feel really nice.  And if all else fails just use some cheap-y baby wash cloths or cut up flannel recieving blankets.

    ditto.

the only reason i have some "store bought" ones is b/c i got the used diapers i bought cheaper b/c the mama wanted to get rid of her wipes too..so as a pkg it was cheaper to get all of it together.

also picked up an $0.80 spray bottle from walmart that i fill w/water and use to wet them. we don't have a wipes warmer and little A doesn't mind.

  • I use Circo (target) brand wash cloths. I love them... you could totally DIY. Some people use flannel blankets to make them. I have a million receiving blankets that I'll never use so I thought about this... once I get my machine up and going :)
