what are some great, fun places to eat in DC? fun bars? nice restaurants? different places? any sightseeing must dos?

thanks for your help!

Re: Mrs.Jocelyn2007

  • Haha, this was a very broad request!

Venice - in terms of the restaurants, what kind of food do you and your husband like to eat? That will help me narrow down my recommendations... I have recs for Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Lebanese/Middle Eastern, Greek, Indian, "American", seafood, romantic, cheap, whatever you like.

As for bars... a few I can think of off the top of my head:

    - in Dupont Circle: Gazuza (upper Connecticut) is a posh and expensive hooka bar, Cafe Citron (lower Connecticut) has nice drinks and good dancing, Cafe Japone (P st and 21st?) turns into a ridiculous karaoke bar late at night and has some good sushi besides

    - in Adams Morgan (18th st): Bourbon is probably one of the nicest bars in the area and serve good food, the Reef is a dive with a good roof, Madam's Organ is huge and dive-y and has live music, Tryst is great for coffee and snacks and the Diner for late-night munchies, avoid Tom Tom's at all costs, Sousi is an amazing hooka bar, I have a friend who swears by Queens hooka bar as well (don't bother with Prince's Cafe due to poor service).

     - in Georgetown: Smith Point (Wisconsin and O, I think?) is where all the preppy Republicans go (I've seen Jenna here), Paolo's (Wisc and N) has a good happy hour, good food, and a cute place for drinks in the outdoor seating area, the Waterfront area (go down Wisconsin toward K st) has a few different restaurants/bars with outdoor areas and that can be a fun scene. Rhino Bar (M and 34th?) has a good happy hour, pool tables, sports (Red Sox), and doesn't get overrun with undergraduates until around 11 pm. The Tombs is on Georgetown's campus - Prospect and 36th - has great food, good happy hour, and very preppy.

As for sights: personally I adore the national zoo (in Woodley park). Also - and obviously - the Smithsonian museums are great, take your pick of whatever you want to see (and check online to see if they have special exhibits that you need tickets for). The Holocaust museum is a downer (duh) but definitely worth it if you're interested, but for this you need to reserve tickets ahead of time. M St and Wisc Ave in Georgetown are great for walking through and shopping. Although it's out of DC, the Alexandria Old Town (King st) and waterfront area are really worth walking around, there's great shops and restaurants. And if you feel like doing a drive, you can go into Virginia and spend a day hiking in the Shenandoah, or you can visit a couple Virginia wineries (they are awesome).

    Aw, I miss DC!

  • wow thanks...

as far as food we love seafood, romantic, and local faves

the alexandria part sounds good since we have a couple days there too...cant wait!

  • Four excellent seafood restaurants that I can think of -

    - in Foggy Bottom: Kinkead's

    - in Georgetown: Sea Catch

    - in Dupont Circle: Grillfish

    - in Alexandria: Chart House

You really can't go wrong with any of these, Grillfish is a little more casual, the others are quite romantic.

Other "romantic" places - personally we loved the Melting Pot (fondue) in Dupont area. Nora's on Florida Ave (Dupont area) is vegetarian, very posh and romantic. There's a cute little place on 18th street in Adams Morgan with a fountain, that's really adorable but I don't remember the name... Basically, if you see something cute and little, it probably is worth checking out.

As for local faves - there is Pasta Mia's on Columbia and 18th (Adams Morgan) - lines out the door before it opens, really cheap and really good Italian food. Little known but excellent Thai restaurant - called Thai Place - on Pennsylvania Ave in Foggy Bottom. Taro Sushi on P St (Dupont area) has excellent Japanese food, lots of Asian business men go there so you know it's good. A cheap but fantastic lunch can be had at Burrito Brothers on 19th st in Dupont, Five Guys is a hamburger staple (branches in Georgetown and Dupont Circle), and Ben's Chili Bowl is an icon as well (U St).

Have fun and tell me all about it afterwards so I can live vicariously through you!
