Seed Company Question

The last couple of years we have had only a couple of tomato plants, a few pepper plants and various herbs in our small garden.  .

Since last year's grwoing seasin, we have moved to a home with a larger yard and as a result, we are planning on planting a more expansive garden plan to include building 3-6x3 ft raised beds and 2-4x4 beds on the south side of the yard and 1-2x6 bed in a slightly more shaded area on west side of our home.

In addition to our usual tomato, pepper and herb plants we hope to plant cucs, eggplant, beets, carrots, parsnips, strawberries, beans, peas, corn, lettuce along with several herbs to be grown in planters on our south facing deck.

So I am looking at various seed/plant catalogs (Burpee, Territorial Seed Co, MI Bulb Co, Gurnsey are ones I have already) but have never ordered from a seed catalog before.

Are some companies better than others?  Do some have better veggies or flowers or herbs?  Do some have better plants versus some better with seeds?  Any recommendations?

I am trying hard not to order too much stuff since I am worried about succmbing to the not uncommon problem of overbuying that many new(er) gardeners succumb to, especially since living in Zone 5, my planting season seems really far away.

Re: Seed Company Question

  • I've never bought seeds from Gurney's, but I've been very disappointed with their plants.  I've use Burpee in the past & had good results.  Last year I also used Johnny's Select Seed.  I believe both Burpee & Johnny's primarily have veg/herb & a limited flower selection.

If you are interested in heirloom varieties, you may want to check out Seed Savers Exchange.

Honestly, seeds keep.  If you don't use everything this year, you can try for next year or bring them to a seed swap.

  • We ordered from Seed Savers this year and have been impressed so far.  Great customer service, fast shipping, and the seed packages not only come with planting instructions but information on how to save the seeds as well (not surprising, really, but it was a nice touch).

I'm anxious to see how they perform.

  • I order from Tomato Grower's Supply Co and Burpee and I have been very happy with both.

  • I ordered from Baker Creek last year and was impressed with how quickly it shipped. Their catalog is beautiful, and they have an insane amount of varieties of fruit and vegetable seeds (and the world's largest selection of heirloom melons. No kidding).
