Taxes suck!

Just my Tuesday morning vent. DH and I did our taxes online yesterday and after several hours we thought we had figured it out. We both put filing married and jointly but somehow I ended up submitting a return and DH ended up submitting a return. And now mine has been rejected, but DH's went through even though it had none of my information on it. Oh Lordy, we screwed something up majorly last night. So I guess tonight will be Tax Night #2 of which may or may not be any better than last night because I'm definitely going to have a glass of wine or two, haha. It is looking like we are going to get a nice return back (well that was based on last nights stuff) so that is a high point.

Re: Taxes suck!

  • If you file married filing jointly then you only submit one return, not two....hence the jointly.
  • You can submit a modified return.  Hopefully you're able to fix it...

FWIW, dh and I have considered a tax preparer for this reason.... granted dh's side of things are always a mess because he's primarily self-employed so all sorts of stuff is weird.

  • If your DH's return was already accepted by the IRS you must do what is called an amended return or a 1040x and fix his with all of your information on it. I would contact what ever online service you used IMMEDIATELY and see if they can stop his return from going to the IRS if it hasn't already hit. When ever you file a joint return you only file 1 return, not 2 seperate returns. Not to burst your bubble, but once you put your income in with DH's your refund may change dramatically. Plus don't forget if you bought a home or a car last year to write those off too! That will give your return quite a boost in the right direction!

  • GL! I always let DH do the taxes (but he does work PT at H&R Block) so that helps. GL!
  • We used Turbo Tax every year. If anyone out there hasn't tried it, I recommend it! It saves your info every year and literally takes less than 10 minutes to complete. It's all 100% guaranteed too, so I have no worries!

    Ditto this!

  • Thanks Ladies! DH and I looked into it last night and we can't even amend until the 18th when the forms come out. So it's looking like this weekend will be in tax hell again.
