Any recommendations? I'm looking for a basic machine (I'm a newbie when it comes to sewing). Something I can use as a beginner, then continue to use once I'm more experienced!
Thanks so much!
Re: Sewing Machine
My grandmother gave me the Kenmore Model number 385.15243/15343 (thats what my manual says, so I'm not sure what it's really under). I know she got it at Sears about 2 years ago. I don't think it was too expensive and my Nana really knows how to sew so I'm sure she bought something that would hold up and has everything that I'd need to sew. I personally love it. It's simple to use/ understand and it has several different stitches. Threading is easy and it comes with a built in bobbin winder and thread cutter which is nice. Oh it also has this nifty arm that threads the needle, THAT IS AWSOME! haha It's definitely nothing too high tech. My mother has one with a touch screen and could probably bake a pie if you wanted, but I know that was super expensive. This model for me was a great intro machine. I've made tons of blankets and burp clothes along with a few simple kids dresses. Next project on the list is pj pants for the neices and nephews for Christmas, we have 7 of them so I'm going to try to start early.
My only complaint is that when you first start stitching a peice the thread tends to get pulled out of the needle if you don't give yourself a lot of slack. I don't know if that makes any sense. Also I use mine pretty regularly and I'm just about to take it in for a tune up, so that lasted a good 2 years of some hard sewing before it needed to be taken in to get oiled.
I just did a super quick search and my machine kind of looks like this one, but I think it has a few more features. GL with your decision!

I just bought a Singer 7470 and it is fabulous! Its and electronic sewing machine and it does some embroidery. It is well worth the money!

I posted a similar question on the Crafts board last week, since I also want to start sewing and have never before.
The responses I received was the: Brother XR-9000 and Brother CE-5000PRW are 2 machines to look into; and that overstock.com is somewhere to start looking for deals.
I haven't done anything yet with the info, but intend to do some further research before making a purchase.
Hope that helps!
