any catholic girls out there?

What are your "giving up" or "doing extra of" for Lent this year?  Ash Wednesday is this week.

Re: any catholic girls out there?

  • I'm not Catholic, but Episcopalians do a form of Lent, at least I think we do.  I plan to give up fried potatoes of any kind: fries, chips, etc.  I really love me some salt, but I know that it's terrible for me.  I did it last year and lost about 5lbs (I worked out more, too).

DH says he's giving up "sloth," which he says means that he's going to work out 3-4 times a week, as opposed to the 0 times he does right now.

  • I'm Lutheran.  Lutherans don't usually do the whole giving-up things for lent, but I've done it in the past.  Don't think I will this year.

When I was in college, I gave up caffeine (outside of chocolate... couldn't give up both chocolate and caffeine...).  I was doing really good, especially considering that I worked at Starbucks at the time.  Then, about two weeks before Easter, a brownie broke at work.  When pastries break at Starbucks, the baristas would refer to that as "snack time." So we were splitting the brownie, and I couldn't figure out why the brownie tasted sooooo good.

Then it dawns on me - it was an espresso brownie.   Thus ended my caffeine fast, lol.

  • I'm going to go vegetarian! I've always wanted to do it, but it's so hard because DH is a total meat eater. Still not sure how we're going to compromise...
  •

Reinedumonde- Giving up fried foods would be tough with my husband around.

    Karen- LOL!

Last year I gave up Diet Coke and Coffee.  It was really hard!

This year, I have decided instead of giving something up I am going to do something extra.  Going to go to a Catholic bookstore on my lunch today and get a Daily Missal that I can read during Lent.

This is what my husband said he was going do!  Not sure how we are going to compromise either.  Looks like I might be cooking two meals every night!

I'm non-denominational Christian but the church I attend encourages some of the old traditions like Lent.  Last year my good friend and her mom added Thankfulness.  They chose a couple times in the day that they would intentionally stop and notice what they are thankful for and thank God for those things.  I thought adding something, though not traditional, was a great thought.  I'm going to try to think about doing something along those lines as well.

It's tough with mine around, too!  He loves chips and fast food and pretty much anything with salt in it.  Any other time of year, I totally give into it, but I need the whole "God is watching you" element to keep me in line.

Good for you for the Daily Missal idea!  Getting more in touch with your faith is probably an even better way to celebrate Lent than punishing yourself with food.

  • I've been thinking about this, too. As a kid, we always gave up chocolate at my Mom's suggestion, it made Easter that much more exciting when we could pig out on it. When I got older I gave up caffeine, and I don't remember what I gave up last year.

I think I am going to exercise more since I've gotten lazy, and try to be nicer to everyone. I've been in SUCH a foul mood lately, and I need to make an effort.

  • I'm not Catholic, I'm Lutheran.  We don't do the whole lent thing, but my mom always makes me eat fish on Fridays.  I second the exercising more.  Maybe I should give up the F word?  Noooo.....that's not possible. Zip it!

    HA!

  • I'm going to start going to church more often....I've slacking majorly there.

    Give up the foul mouth.

Give up the whole soda thing again this year and cut back on the sugar intake.

Give up being such a sloth: my plan is to give myself some time limits on facebook, the nest, the internet and tv.  Then do things that internet and tv takes away from a productive day (the most productive one can be when jobless): work out, paint, craft, volunteer....all things that I want to do, but don't cause the internet and tv suck me in.
