Positive Vibes for DH please!

DH is trying to quit smoking.  We decided it's best for him to quit before the baby comes so we're not dealing with his withdrawl and a newborn at the same time (duh!).

He quit once before using hypnosis.  That lasted about 5 months.  He says he's ready now and he's just sick of smoking...and he wants to quit for the baby.  He started taking Chantix (sp?) yesterday so we'll see how it goes!  Any Nestie vibes are appreciated!

Does anyone have any experience with Chantix?

  • Good luck to him!

When my older cousin was born my aunt and uncle told my grandparents they wouldn't be allowed to hold the baby unless they had quit smoking. It worked! Hopefully the baby is all the incentive your DH needs :-)

  • Good luck!  A friend of mine is quitting now using Chantix.  It made him feel nauseous, but that might just be him.  Agree with Two - hopefully the baby will be the incentive he needs!

  • My dad quit cold turkey when I was little.  He threw a cigarette out the window of his car and it flew back in my window and burned me.  That was it for him!  I certainly think a baby will be incentive enough to quit!  Good luck to your DH.
  • Good luck to your DH!
  • Good luck to your DH!  It is a very hard habit to break, but he can do it.  A couple people I work with quit smoking while using Chantix.  It can work!  I quit a couple years ago because my husband really didn't like it and he kept telling me that he didn't want to have to visit me in hospice.  He would tell me awful stories of the patients he has seen (he was an EMT) that had lung cancer and how awful it was for them and how painful etc. it was.  So I basically did it for him, and for me.  So I'm sure your DH can do it for the baby :)

  • Sending lots of positive vibes to your dh!!!  I wish him lots of luck!!!

Four years ago, dh and I made a deal, if I quit smoking he would get braces, so that's what we did.  He got braces a month or so later and I quit by going cold turkey.  I had a few slips here and there the first year or two, since then I have had no desire to smoke anymore.

  • Good luck to him- what a great call to try to get this out of the way before baby =)

I've never smoked, so I can only say anecdotally, "they" say the first week or 2 is worst. I have known many adult patients who have had excellent results with Chantix! Including one lady who was a 3 pack/day smoker (yikes!)

  • Good luck to him!  I will be sending him all the smoke free vibes I can!  Quitting is super hard, at least it was for me.  But there will be a day when he'll walk by someone smoking and the smell will revolt him and he'll be so proud of that day.  It takes time and it's a hard addiction to break.  He will feel really proud of himself and healthy afterwards though.  For me, quitting was a tough but really really good decision.  GL again!
  • Good luck to your DH. I can't give you any advice from my own personal experience, but my Dad quit smoking 9 or 10 years ago(after over 30 years). He had tried the meds and I have heard they work for some people, but they didn't for him. He did it cold turkey and just chewed on gum and stimudents constantly for a few years. Hope the meds work for your hubby, but if he starts getting antsy, maybe he could try the meds combined with chewing gum? Good luck!
