Can I pick your brains again?
(this is for my media studies class again)
When I say "mental illness" what pops into your head (hopefully a movie or TV show)?
Re: Can I pick your brains again?
If I had to think of one movie with mental illness it would be the movie with Brittany Murphy. I think the name of it is "I'll Never Tell" or something like that.
S, that was "Don't Say A Word." But if I'm going to pick a Brittany Murphy/mental illness movie, it would be "Girl, Interrupted."
Mental illness = psychosis, schizoprehnia, bipolar disorder, etc.

Thanks, ladies, good ideas. See, I think of "Sybil" and I knew there had to be something more up-to-date.
Anyone else? Keep 'em coming!

Hmm, I don't think of a tv show or movie. I picture a generic mental ward and think of specific illnesses, like bipolar, manic depression, schizophrenia, etc.
When led to think of tv or movie, the first of those that does pop into my mind is House from the time he spent in a mental hospital recovering.

Love that movie!
Thanks guys! I am going to be writing about how the media perpetuates stereotypes about people with mental illness and how actually this is a stigma which negatively impacts them. But I was trying to come up with an "artifact" of a sort of stereotypical portrayal of a person with mental illness.
If you haven't seen "Sybill," she has dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personalities) which is a) really uncommon, if there's only going to be a few movies about mental illness why does it have to be about that one? and b) really sensational--not at all a realistic disorder someone might have. Also, Sally Field's performance is really flamboyant and sensational.
But I think you guys have given me some good, modern films worth examining.
