TMI: UTI

can you cure this w/out antibiotics? I'm afraid I have one (I have to pee constantly and can only wait a few minutes w/out having pressure) but I can't take antibiotics since I have c.diff. I'm on antibiotics now, but these antibiotics only go to the gut, so they wouldn't help the UTI. What should I do? All this stuff is just getting to be too much.

Re: TMI: UTI

  • Ouch, I'm so sorry - totally don't envy you. When I feel one coming one, I start tanking lots of water and cranberry juice.. make sure you get the real stuff, not the cranberry cocktail which is made of mostly grape juice. And to relieve the urge to pee every 3 minutes, there's some over the counter stuff, like uristat or sometimes the CVS or drug stores will sell there own brand. *Warning though, it dyes your pee really freaky orange.

I'm not sure if it cures it, but it's helped me.

    Good luck

  • I have never had one. I credit real cranberry juice. Make sure you get real 100% cranberry in the organic section of the store (of if you have a Whole Food or other health food store). It will cost 5 times more than Ocean Spray. It should not have any other juice or any sweetener added. It will taste bitter and bad. Hold your nose if you must. It's one of the healthiest things out there.

  • The one and only time I had one, I got to the store ASAP and got tons of cranberry juice. It took a few days for the UTI to clear up but luckily I was able to avoid having to go to the doctor.

UTIs suck big time and I hope you start to get better soon.

  • The doctor I mentioned in the post above agrees with all PPs - 100% cranberry juice does help.  It contains a compound that prevents the bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall.  He's recommending it for prevention, but if you're already suffering it will help.  Of course if it gets worse you'll want to see a doctor.

  • Thanks, guys. I went to the dr today and he took a culture, but he said I might get a false negative, since I'm on antibiotics already. He gave me a Rx and said if gets really uncomfortable to take them, otherwise, to try the cranberry pills.
  • I think your symptoms sound like it might be in an advanced stage, so I would explore other options with your doctor.

But in the future if you catch it early enough the cranberry juice, along with plenty of water and cran. capsules really do help and at this point won't hurt you so try it anyways.  The M&M looking pills (OTC uristat? or soemthing by prescription) help too by numbing the tract so you temporarily are not in pain and can let the cranberry juice build up to help flush everything out.  They do dye your urine orange.

  •  YES.  I personally think that antibiotics are completely over-prescribed.  However, different women experience different degrees of severity and treatments that work for some don't for others.

The first time, I had a friend who told me to drink lots of water, cranberry juice, Azo standard, and gave me a dose of whatever it was she used regularly (the name reminded me of some kind of bacteria, but I can't remember now...). Anyway, she also informed me that once you've experienced one, you're doomed forever.  But I've found that to be wrong!

I searched online (take a look at http://www.ehow.com/tips_5444.html) for home remedies and found one that works for me: vinegar and plenty of water.  I knew that vinegar was an old remedy for many ailments, and that some drink it daily for health benefits, so I decided it couldn't hurt to try.  I drank 2 ounces of white vinegar with at least 16 ounces of water, 3 times a day, for 3 days.  My stomach felt pretty bloated but the symptoms ceased in less than a day, and I finished the 3 days to try and make sure all the bacteria was flushed out.  I also rinsed with salt water when I was uncomfortable down under.

I haven't had symptoms for 6 months - and before this I had 3 or 4 infections within 2 months.  Now I'll start taking shots of vinegar at the first signs of infection.
