How do you organize addresses

Random question of the day, how do your organize the addresses of friends and family?

Right now I have various spreadsheets in excel, made up of the lists from our wedding invtes (which many are now out of date since it was almost 3 yrs ago) and the excel file of people we sent Xmas cards to.

It's a big mess though and I need a new system. Was wondering what everyone else does to keep track of these things. We always had a central address book growing up that my mom kept everyone's info in, but in today's electronic age that just doesn't seem to make sense to me...

haha! This is exactly what we have too! Each year for Christmas cards I copy the previous year's worksheet & re-label, then update any addresses that changed (and highlight the ones I changed in yellow).

  • I use Excel too. It started with our wedding invite list, then changed with our Christmas card list, etc. Now I have ONE list with all names and address, kids names, and even pets names...and have smaller lists broken down for different purposes (ie Christmas cards, party invites, etc). It's cause I'm anal retentive. lol
  • I used Google Docs for my wedding guest list and I've just continued to update that list. In that list, I had a column for "category" (i.e. my family, H's family, my high school friends, his undergrad friends etc.) which also helps with filtering when necessary.

  • I'm interested in knowing this too. We just use an address book that we keep in a kitchen drawer, but it's not always as up-to-date as I'd like it to be. I do have an Excel file from our wedding invites saved somewhere, but I'm sure half of those aren't accurate anymore ...

  • great question.

i think i'm inspired by Melozia. I need to create a new spreadsheet with updated addresses and family additions (i have that separately right now) . i might do that while i'm home sick today since it doesn't take much energy.

    thanks for the inspiration!

  • I just use the address book on our mac at home.  Mind you I don't have to worry about wedding invites or anything and I do only a handful of Christmas cards and do them by hand.

  • I just use my email (when someone sends out a new addy I just label it under 'Contact info'. Or I have it memorized.
  • We use address book on our mac and google docs...I love google docs. I started using it in Business school and become semi obsessed. Organizing can be such a pain in the @ss!
  • I have one master spreadsheet with everyone's address. As people update their addresses, or I get new addresses for new people, I update the spreadsheet so it's always updated.
  • I have a big fat address book;
As christmas or wedding invites or personal mails arrived I save the envolope and stuff it into the book and once a month or so I go through and update the book.
I tried speadsheets and emails but I would forget to save it or update it and then lose the info.
  • I use a paper address book too, it's bright blue so it can't get lost. ?When mail comes from people, I cut off their return addresses to double check that I still have a current one.

People who own homes are written in ink, people who rent (students and vagrant friend types) are in pencil. ?That way they don't end up taking the whole 'M' section or something. ?

I had my wedding invites in excel, but it became out of date and I find the paper one handy for traveling (though I often just copy a "postcard list" onto a sheet stashed in my purse).
