WDYT of this camera?

I want to upgrade my camera to a nicer point and shoot but DH said he would rather pay more now and get something that I won't have to keep upgrading every few years or so.

Re: WDYT of this camera?

  • Which Nikon is that?  We're buying a new one tomorrow probably and are between the Nikon D3000 and the Canon Rebel XSI.

At Sams, the Nikon D3000 is only $479.  The Rebel is $599.  Hence our debating.  We always wanted the Rebel, but if we got the Nikon then we could also get a new TV for the living room.

  • it's a great entry level camera, and you can always upgrade your glass for better quality later.

christen, i compared the two cameras you're talking about - the xsi has two more megapixels than the d3000, and the xsi has liveview - you can use it like a point and shoot camera and take pics looking at the back of the screen or through the viewfinder.  the d3000 doesn't have live view.

the xsi shoots a little faster in rapid sequences - 3.5 frames per second compared to 3 with the nikon.  makes a difference if you are chasing after a kiddo and snapping fast.

if you plan to get better lenses in the future, go with the canon.  the L series lenses can't be matched by anything nikon makes.

  • Nikons and Canons are like, the top line for dSLRs. I've talked to many photog friends about Nikon vs. Canon and they say it's basically personal preferance. Nikon is a great brand, but once you buy that brand, you should stick with it as far as lens purchasing is concerned. You can't put a Nikon lens on a Canon body, KWIM?

You should probably go to a Best Buy and feel both brands out to see which one you would feel more comfy with.

Personally, I've used Canon's for years, so when I'm ready to upgrade to a dSLR, I'm most definitely going with Canon. :) Hope that helps!
