Happy Wednesday!

(I hope by using the word 'happy' it will magically make me happy.)

Hi! How is everyone?  Entertain me! I'm so sick of doing work.

I wished it worked that way... I could use a pick-me-up today.  I think I have the winter blues.  I'm so tired all of the time and just need something fun to happen.

  • I just woke up. Yes, it is noon. I don't feel well for some reason today. Luckily, I already had today off. But, that also worked out because we got about 3 or 4 more inches of snow last night, bringing our total up to about a foot of snow and ice.

  • I'm crabby today. My day started fine, but a trip to the county admin bldg quickly soured my mood.

Quick story not related to anything: this morning I'm getting my breakfast ready and I look out of my window into the backyard to find Forte trying to tunnel out from under the fence! Chaz, being the perfect little brother that he is, was standing right next to Forte watching on telling him what a bad idea it was to dig under the fence. Actually, Chazzy's paws were caked in mud, so I assume they were taking turns and I just caught them while Forte was at bat. I yelled Forte's name from inside the house, and they both turned and bolted. Then, since I'd heard that cayenne pepper is a good deterrent for digging, I got in the spice cupboard to find the cayenne and coated the entire area where they'd be clawing. I go back to my regularly scheduled business in the kitchen and look outside to see them both licking up the pepper! It didn't phase them at all! Next solution: 40 lb sandbag over the hole. I really hope it keeps them in!

This made me laugh, but I 100% feel your pain.  Cassius, our boxer/husky mix is a digger and its a huge pain.  I have never heard the cayenne pepper thing, I'm going to have to try that.  He dug his way under the fence several times as a small puppy and our house backs up to a semi-busy road so after a couple scares, we put it in an underground electric fence to keep him in.

He's safe but he still digs holes in the middle of the yard and he's 4.  I kept hoping he would grow out of it and he gets yelled at/punished when I catch him but there isnt a lot of teaching going on when I come home from work to new holes and cant catch him in the act.  Basically I dont have any advice, I can only commiserate with you.

  • Amy, please see my gmail status for a research project. Thanks! :)

Chrissy, hilarious! (and frustrating) My parents tried moth balls for their lab with no success. We haven't started using deterrents yet, but probably will soon.  We have way too many holes in our backyard already!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Our lab, Mav, used to looove to dig. When she was smaller she escaped a few times and terrorized the neighborhood. Luckily we don't live near a busy road, but we do live directly across from a pond. I looked out the window one day to her running around the banks, splashing in the water. Every once in a while when I am walking to the mailbox with her she tries to make a bee-line for the pond.

As for the digging, she just quit. We covered up the spot she was digging, and she never moved on to another spot. I figured she would because she is just barely a year old now.

  • Thanks for the commiseration girls! Hopefully this was just a one time thing. We have holes all over the yard, which I'm fine with (I don't love it, but I can deal with it) over holes under the fence. If the dogs got out, I'm 1000% sure that Forte would just take off. Chaz would probably get excited, run around in the street for a few minutes, and then sit in the drive way and cry until someone let him back in the yard. They both have tags and they're both micro-chipped, but the thought of one/both of them getting out of the yard terrifies me!
  • Yeah my lab mix used to take off if you opened the door without paying attention to her.  It would take an hour to get her winded and tired so she would jump in the car with you.  There was no chance of catching her if you were on foot.  It was awful.  Luckily she did grow out of that one by the time she was about 2 and now neither of them go anywhere.
  •  I have been a tax slaying machine today. 5 down and of course a ton more to go.  I have another 4 hours left at work so I should get a couple more done.

  • I'm finally eating solid foods again after having a horrific case of food poisoning this weekend.  I spent Valentine's Day with an IV in the Emergency Room with DH by my side Sad

I got it from a shrimp soup at a local restaurant (DH had a few spoonfuls and got sick as well) and the thought of shrimp now makes my stomach turn.  And I reported the incident to the health department.

  • Yikes, Steph, that's awful! Um...could you let me know where so I don't ever go there?!

  • Yeah, I'll PM you so I don't start a smear campaign against them.

oh so bad! So sorry about this.

  • Thanks girls.  It was awful, but I'm feeling much better now.

And last night DH and I tore into our Valentine's Day treats since we were both on limited diets all weekend.  Heart-shaped cookie cake never tasted so good!
