Pardon my ignorance: question re: Muslims (just out of curiosity)

I only know a couple of Muslims, and aren't close enough to them to know that I can ask this without offending.

Aren't Muslims supposed to pray towards Mecca like 5x a day or something? What's the rule on that?

Just wondering because I've never actually seen anyone do this. Or even excuse themselves to do so. And one lady I worked with for 3 years. And she was very active in the Muslim community, I know she observed Ramadan, holidays, and such.

Not sure why this never occurred to me before. I guess I just thought I would have noticed it once or twice.

TIA!

Re: Pardon my ignorance: question re: Muslims (just out of curiosity)

  • Every Muslim with whom I have worked prayed to Mecca privately during their lunch hour - some closed their office doors, some went to their cars, some found a secluded, private spot in the building. It was never done publicly though, always in private. The other prayer times didn't occur during our work day.

  • I went to school with, and was therefore friends with a lot of Muslims.  It depends how devout/secular they are how often they pray.  Which is the same as with any religion.  A lot of people call ourselves Christians, but how often do we really go to church, pray, light candles, say grace, etc.  But most devouts pray around lunch time.  In high school, they were excused from class at the same time everyday to pray.

  • Just like what everyone said above there are also different types of Muslims (just like we have different branches of Christianity). They all believe in slightly different times to pray and the number and what you do in public and/or private.

HTH- Outside my company I always remember walking around cab drivers outside their cabs praying on mats on the sidewalk but most of the Muslims I know from actual work only pray in privately sometime during their lunch time and I know they do morning and evening. HTH!

  • We had an exchange student that was Muslim. She didn't pray at school but at home she prayed in her room privately. We took her to temple once, but she didn't like it at all and she never wanted to go back. Just like other churches they are all different. The people worship differently too.
