Being pregnant in Honduras!

My Husband and I are talking about TTC. I go to the gyno for my regular yearly exam next monday. What are some things I should know before I go. Or things that I should ask her?

One other thing is in July we are going on our second missionary trip to Honduras. We stay in an "Americanized" hotel, clean water, food etc. But is it safe for me to be pregnant when we go? (I understand that it might take us longer to get pregnant but i am just trying to cover all bases.)

We will be gone for 2 weeks.

Thanks so much!

Re: Being pregnant in Honduras!

  • I don't think so - I don't think any women in Honduras ever give birth successfully.  That may be why their population is so extremely low.

    OP, ask your doctor.

  • Wait, wait, wait...

You and your H are talking about TTC. Not even actually TTC, just talking about it. You are not pregnant yet. And yet you are worried about the possibility that if, just if you are pregnant in July, will it be safe? And you are only going to be there for two weeks?

I think you should probably hold off on TTC, probably not the best idea to reproduce....ever.

  • You'll probably end up with a litter of alien babies even if you do stay in an Americanized hotel.  Happened to my BFF.  True story.

  • Ok, you guys can make fun of her if you want. But, seriously... I know a girl who got pregnant in Honduras and she gave birth to a goat. Literally, a goat.

  • First of all. There population is not low.... and second of all I guess everyone woke up in a bitchy mood this morning. Like I said I go to the gyno on Monday. So therefore we are just talking about TTC. I dont know what the big deal is. We are going to start after I go to the dr.

I was just wondering if there would be any harm to go to Honduras if I did get pregnant before then.

  • I don't think it would really be a problem, but I'm definately no expert on pregnancy. Might want to ask on the Getting Pregnant board if you are really concerned.

FIrst off, you're on the wrong board. This is SEX AND ROMANCE not GETTING PREGNANT. Ask those girls and ask your doctor.

Plus, your doctor will probably tell you to take prenatal vitamins three months before you even TTC to build up your folic acid and other vitamins. And you'll probably not want to be pregnant (with morning sickness) and on a mission trip in hot, hot July.

Well, gee thanks for clearing that up.

You should not travel any where when you are pregnant. You should stay home and not leave the house. There are germs everywhere.

  • Ok...pipe down everybody...

The only concern I would have about being pregnant in a foreign country is the negative effects you might experience from a food-borne infection.  People who grow up in a region are acclimated to the bacteria etc. present in the food and the water in that area.  Even while being very careful, you could get exposed to bacteria that your system is not used to and you could have a strong bout of food poisoning.  My FI travelled to India a couple of years ago with his team from work and half of them got a stomach bug -- and they were all staying in a very nice hotel and were very careful about food, drinking and even teeth brushing.

A heavy bout of intestinal distress might adversely affect your pregnancy.  I personally would wait to conceive until after the trip...take my vitamins, get uber healthy and then try in August.  But that is merely my opinion.

    this!

  • There's a good deal of cholera in Honduras.  You want to have a baby with cholera before it's even born?
  • Like PPs said, this is the wrong board for this question, but I will point out 2 things.

    1. If you're considering going to Honduras while PG, get all of your travel vaccines before you start trying. Some travel vaccines are not safe during pregnancy.

    2. Some Dr.s don't recommend air travel during the 3rd trimester. I guess you'd have to get PG on the first try basicially to be in 3rd tri by July, but it's something to consider.

These are all things your Dr. should discuss with you.

    Yes

  • I would talk to your OB about it.  I traveled internationally when I was PG, but I didn't have to worry about food borne illnesses or the quality of care I would receive where I was going if I needed it.  I did make sure that we wouldn't be going when I was in my 1st tri, in case I had morning sickness (which I did).  I went early in my 2nd tri and it was a great time to travel.  So, if your OB is ok with it and you can time it as best you can, then it should be ok.  I wouldn't go in late 2nd tri and your OB will probably tell you not to go in your 3rd tri.  But, keep in mind that anything can happen when you're PG and your DH might be going alone if you have to stay home.  If you are both ok with that and you get the green light from your OB, then go for it.

This.  Love, women give birth in Honduras all.the.time.  It's not as if someone's asking you to give birth in a latrine.  It will be okay.

  • If it was me, I'd either not go if I was pregnant, or try to conceive after I got back.
